Don't be afraid to say no to new business

We were recently approached by a potential client as a result of a recommendation from a current client. That's how we get a LOT of our business. We want new business, naturally, and we enjoy getting it as a result of a referral from a happy client.
We liked this particular project. We liked the industry sector. We liked the proposed location. We liked the guy running the project too. He seemed genuine and the job would have been a great one to be involved in. We liked the whole thing.
It ticked a lot off boxes for us and we wanted it.
We turned the project down.
We'd do it again too.
The timeline on it was a little short and we're flat out currently. We're heading to the National Ploughing Championships this week with 3 clients. The vast majority of our Team are tied up with that and we've a number of ongoing projects keeping us busy outside of Ploughing too.
We won't take on a project unless we know we can do it properly and to our standards.
We're currently looking for a new full time member of the Team. Having more good people in here will help us avoid having to make tough decisions like this one in the future but I'd be silly to think it'll never happen again.
It wasn't an easy decision but we value what we do too much to risk compromising what we do for our clients.
Hopefully this prospective client might come back to us in the future. Here's hoping.
We won't lose sleep over having turned it down though.
Don't be afraid to say no to new business if you can't do it justice.

9 年As a police officer how, at times, I would love to have had the option to say no now and again ! - but it is a good and rare thing to maintain standards. Well done you.

9 年Apologies Time to expand your contractor network? We turn down a small number of events each year - luckily not due to management / staffing shortages but usually due to our terms and conditions not being met. It's best practise for us to always maintain high standards. Sometimes the best job you do is the one you don't accept.

9 年We've quite an extended network actually. For instance, we had around 50 working the weekend of Pride across 4 different events. We need to be sure those we include in our extended Team and networks ace similar standards to our own. We're constantly expanding too.
