Don't be afraid.

Don't be afraid.

Yes AI is disruptive. How disruptive? Hard to say, but I think most people are still under estimating how simultaneously painful and empowering this technology is.

Take a look at this amazing generative video from Sora (OpenAI).? https://openai.com/sora

Before long these photo real characters will be interacting, following a plot (or multiple), speaking dialog designed specifically for you… to touch your feelings, answer your questions, and yes play on your fears. Movies, Social Media, Video Games, Metaverse… the mediums will change shape, but they will become more accessible and influential.

How will this effect society; our kids, our institutions, elections, democracy?

Don’t be afraid. Fear is a spirit, and it’s not your spirit. Fear is offered to us by some other dark entity. It’s being handed to us and we can take it, or not. We can dwell on these sensational thoughts and feelings (ask ChatGPT about “doom scrolling”), or we can say “no thanks”, and work at building better habits.

CHEAT CODE — even more effective is to wield these specific words: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) … feel free to ask me more about this.

Fear can be like a silent boat anchor dragging behind us as we try to motor forward. We barely notice it until it catches on something big, but it’s always holding us back.

At its worst fear is a prison, but entertaining even a little fear limits our growth.

I’ve often heard courage defined as “acting, even when afraid”. Yes, I subscribe to this, and I also believe it is possible to squelch the fear itself which in turn reduces the friction between our current state and realizing our potential.

Allow me one more analogy. Imagine you’re running on the road (facing traffic of course) and a car is headed toward you. You can:

A - Stay in the road and hope they see you

B - Stop, cower, and hope they see you

C - Keep your eyes up, move away, and keep running

My point is, being proactive or reactive does not require a spirit of fear, just a sound mind.

I get it, thoughts are tricky, sometimes it feels like I am speaking (in control) and other times it feels like I am listening (not in control).

Take control. Focus your thoughts. Focus on using the gifts God gave you to serve others. They are your personal super powers and you have been designed to feel the most fulfilled when you use them to love God and love your fellow human.

AI will never be able to take away your purpose.

Thanks for sharing this Jed. AI is the wild-west it seems, and already disruptive; but what does 'tomorrow' look like? Exciting and unsettling?

Fear has a very important role to play in our lives -- it's the flashing red warning light designed to attract our attention and alert us to danger. The problem is that our environment is no longer generally slow-paced, with the occasional sabre-toothed-tiger fight-or-flight moment. Everything, near and far, directly impacting us today, or potentially impacting us years from now is directly transmitted to our brains on a minute-by-minute basis, triggering a whole dashboard of warning lights to flash simultaneously and constantly. This is why we feel drained, depressed, and powerless. Part of the solution is limiting exposure to the over-hyped firehose of scary news. Another is remind ourselves that the world hasn't fundamentally changed, and for those of us in developed countries it's much better than people have been able to live for millennia. But the most powerful solution is to put it all into the hands of the One who loves us and cares for us beyond what this world can do to us. (That's the one I'm still working on!)

Great article Jed Burdick - we keep moving forward and adapting as humans have always done. Onward and with any luck/perseverance upward!

AI tools like SORA may disrupt visual effects and empower armchair filmmakers. But they lack the human spark that makes narrative art connect with mass audiences,
