Don't be afraid to ask for business on LinkedIn

I don’t often post emotionally led opinion or use LinkedIn as a soap box, but felt it was time I said something (apologies in advance for anyone that gets offended)

When you Google LinkedIn it has several Definition/Meanings, all of which contain “professional networking” “business community” “employment”

I therefore fail to understand why the trend from some members in the networks and groups I am on is moving towards a feeling of annoyance – I even saw them described as “I hate these terms” earlier today - when people who introduce themselves ask for your business.

I understand the frustration when you get a poor connection request and automated sequence by those using automation where they have not done accurate Sales Nav searches. I even understand that the number of people asking for your business is increasing and that content shock many years ago led to it becoming increasingly difficult to be heard above the noise, but please bear something in mind…

I was a telemarketer trainer for many years where the greatest sin was not asking for the appointment!

Sales leaders I speak to are frustrated by their reps who don’t ask for the business for fear of rejection.

So if someone doesn’t spend the 1st 6 months trying to become your friend before asking for your business, don’t be angry, offended or hate them for being direct, but try and appreciate that they are simply saying “I think what we do may be beneficial to your business, do you have some time to allow me to have a discovery call then send a proposal.”

Don’t forget you accepted or invited them to connect, and you can always remove the connection.

LinkedIn isn’t Facebook, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Instagram, (insert apt dating website/app) its for people who want to do business. I appreciate it is much more than that for some who want to keep up to date with trends, insights and opinions from within their sector, keep in touch with clients and ask for and proffer recommendations, but please lets not character assassinate those who use it to prospect for new business first and foremost.

So for those of you scared to ask, be brave, the worst that they can say is no! For those of you who get asked, please remember why you joined LinkedIn in the first place.

Great article Jason, you've absolutely hit the nail on the head here. It's nice to see some of the lighter posts on LinkedIn, however, people should absolutely remember that LinkedIn is a business networking platform and therefore ALL members should be prepared to be asked for their business at some point, and certainly shouldn't discredit those that do ask! Great article Jason! ??
