We consider ourselves to be very generous and supportive. Are we?
In 2020, hunger reached 19 million Brazilians.
Meanwhile, in this first year of the pandemic, our Brazilian startups raised more than US $ 3.5 billion and the total fortune sum of our 65 billionaires was approximately US$291,1 billion.
According to the “World Giving Index 2019”, Brazil ranks 74th out of 140 countries in the solidarity ranking, averaged over ten years.
There is no doubt that we are agile and articulate in our ability to mobilize when faced with situations of extreme helplessness, as we did at the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020.
According to the survey “Impact of Covid-19 on Brazilian CSOs: from Immediate Response to Resilience”, 87% of our organizations offered assistance and connected emergency resources to the vulnerable populations most affected by Covid-19, especially in the distribution of food and hygiene products, as well as raising awareness about the use of protective and safety equipment against coronavirus in communities.
As an organized civil society, we were able to raise, in the last year, the amount of US$1,17 billon in donations, of which 74% were directed to health, according to the Monitor of Donations of the Brazilian Association of Fundraising - ABCR.
But donating money, time or knowledge is not yet part of our culture.
So much so that donations have been plummeting as the pandemic continues. How can we transform our "straw fire" into a continuous practice? When have we got used to not seeing the inequality, hunger and misery that surround us?
Can you remember the last time you were angry at an inhuman situation that took you out of your usual lethargy?
What was the trigger?
What have you done?
For how long?
What impact have you caused?
Has this action really impacted your life and changed your behavior?
Or have you gone back to your old “normal”?
What planet do you live on? You can't keep on seeing people dying of hunger or covid-19 and doing nothing!
Of course, you are not to blame for your privileges, none of us are. But alienation has a limit!
We need to act, put our hand on our conscience and pocket! Donate everything that is within our reach - money, time, knowledge, influence, ability to articulate. “It's all for yesterday”, as Emicida, a famous Brazilian rapper uses to say.
There are no saviors of our motherland. We, as an organized civil society, have the power to fight inequality, hunger, misery and enforce the human rights of all people.
It is our responsibility to transform our companies, communities, cities, countries into ethical, socially fair and inclusive places, committed to the sustainability of the planet.
It's about time to put into practice the beautiful speeches and announcements of our ESG commitment!

3 年Your article is fantastic! It's well-put, effective and incredibly concise. What are some local (Brazilian) organisations that we should be making donations to, in your opinion? (I prefer ones that are centered around enforcing human rights.)

3 年Donation specially Sadqa Jaria that is social work for community like water well, shelters or social centers for organs, crippled and other deserving people is best job for generation. Now Corona has made many families donation receivers. We can make better world by stopping Corona through seeking mercy and forgiveness from Allah one and only one Supreme law giver. Serious violation of human rights like in Kashmir by terrorist Modi and his extremists hindu RSS gang killers have destroyed many nations in the past. Donations sadqat, kherat, zakat and continuous prayers are required to rid of all problems.

3 年Thanks, Justa, for a heart-touching message. Our thoughts and prayers go to all those who were impacted by these unprecedented times of Covid. Indeed it is more than any other time where solidarity of giving has to cross boundaries. The Pandemic, unfortunately, has tested our inability to endure such change. The consequences on humanity, especially the needy, is beyond comprehension. The NGOs locally and globally are suffering the lack of sustainable income to cater for such long-term calamities. The existence of institutional voids in many countries make a culture of giving to such good cause a challenge. Unfortunately, the return of states nationalism had made the process even more complicated. Covid should bring solidarity and reinstate the value of kindness to all fronts to strengthen our coexistence beyond the area. Countries can not sustain their charities bubbles any longer, neither do we as individuals. Still, my question is, how do we overcome the current institutional void, which often deterred people from giving kindly?
