Donald Trump Wants To Remove Fluoride From Water!

Is It Harmful For Human Health?

With the recent 2024 U.S. election results being declared, a surprising topic has emerged in the national conversation: fluoride in drinking water. The newly elected 47th President of the USA, Donald Trump have raised concerns, sparking public interest and debate over this common additive.

What is Fluoride, and What’s Its Purpose?

When first introduced into the public water supply, fluoride was viewed with some scepticism, but since its regular usage has significantly lowered dental cavities, it has become the norm more than the exception. Fluoride occurs naturally in several minerals, including rocks, soil, and groundwater – the collection of these studies demonstrates the beneficial effect of fluoride upon dental health for children in particular making such usage to be encouraged as a public good.

Why is Fluoride in the News & Does it carry any health risks?

The recent US elections brought renewed focus to the topic of fluoride in drinking water. Some, including Donald Trump and RFK Jr., raised concerns about the potential health risks.

Claims have been made suggesting a link between fluoride and issues like bone fractures, neurodevelopmental disorders, and IQ loss.

Controversy Around It

There is a degree of division among individuals in a public health issue such as this. For instance, there exists a public consensus of support among several organisations arguing for better access to fluorinated water, however, some voices voice absolute opposition to said measures and highlight potential health problems in large doses also painting a concerning picture, leading to some candidates advocating for a complete ban on fluorinated tap water.

What Does the Science Say?

Research programs conducted by the CDC(U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and other health entities argue further in support of controlled and moderated amounts of fluorides in water. Any alteration in this respect, especially considering the health implications, should be backed by solid and rational reasoning founded on science.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recommends that the ideal level of fluoride in drinking water should be 1 mg/L or less.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also suggests that the maximum safe level of fluoride in drinking water should be 1.5 mg/L.

Conclusion

We at Hydromo believe that any treatment of water and its safety should be based on the trust of the public, on science and evidence. The introduction of additives into water such as fluoridation requires discussions on how to provide all stakeholders with new water solutions without going against their will. Through the thick and thin of the argument, we are focused on the success of the technology changing the water treatment game and people having clean and healthy water in their hands.

Talking Points:

  • Fluoridation is a complex subject with polarising views about it.
  • Scientific studies advocate for the ability of fluoridation in the reduction of cavities.
  • There is a possibility that individual health crises have to be taken into context when a decision is made.
