Donald Trump - A Marketer's Prospective

Donald Trump - A Marketer's Prospective

You have heard it many times, there's an old saying: "All publicity is good publicity, as long as they spell your name right.” And as a marketing intelligence enthusiast, I would pretty much agree with that and also, I think Mr. Trump and his team is following it very seriously.

In an article, Veronika Noize says publicity means visibility, which generates awareness that could lead to interest, which combined with the credibility that earned media endows, could very easily lead to a decision. (Bear in mind that what looks like a long, convoluted path on paper actually takes only seconds to register in the minds of your customers, and then you have results!)

I think Donald Trump and his campaign team is doing a great job in making sure his name is heard or read a few times daily ( now that might be annoying some up to an extent, however, I don’t think they care). What encouraged me to do some more research about this when some youngers who don’t even have rights to vote in the United States of America were talking about him and when I asked do you also know some other candidates they literally didn't know. It's a marketing dream to reach people and even amazing when people talk about you and I guess it was just a fantastic example of Mr. Trump's marketing success so far.

So I simply tried searching these names on google and result were thrilling.

Google Says It All

The graph above shows the number of pages found when you search their name on google. For example the image below -

As its clearly visible, Mr. Trump and the team knows how to create news and most importantly sensational news, we call it content in media language, even if it requires talking about sensitive matters like the recent comment on banning Muslims or using words that have circular meaning.

Another point of my exploration also revealed something interesting, it's the crawling power of Google search engine and a great example of page ranking algorithm to make sure pages with demanding or trending keywords are crawled quickly.

For Mr. Trump, Google found 426k pages per millisecond, almost double in comparison to next in line Ted Cruz for whom it found 234k pages in a millisecond and definitely Mr. Trump has a significant lead against George Pataki who gets only approx 1k pages.

News and media have played, playing and will continue to play a great role in helping Mr. Trump achieve this in one way or another. Recent one on NewYork Times got a super shot where they analyzed his vocabulary here -

"The New York Times analyzed every public utterance by Mr. Trump over the past week from rallies, speeches, interviews and news conferences to explore the leading candidate’s hold on the Republican electorate for the past five months. The transcriptions yielded 95,000 words and several powerful patterns, demonstrating how Mr. Trump has built one of the most surprising political movements in decades and, historians say, echoing the appeals of some demagogues of the past century."

One thing is sure, whether he gets the final candidacy or not, he has certainly become one of the most famous candidates of all time, and the climax is yet to come.

All above is my personal opinion so feel free to share your thoughts!

Hi Goldy, You have an interesting article premise but unfortunately it is based on flawed statistics - it is currently biased since you are just searching for hits on a name, and Donald has had numerous business ventures over a large number of years which will have increased his online presence considerably. You'd need to search for pages which link both politics and the individual together, or are time-stamped to match the upcoming election in order to make a more meaningful comparison.

It is amazing what he's achieved in terms of publicity but I'd just wish he'd say "ah yeah that was just a big joke really. I just wanted to see how far I'd get. I haven't a clue about politics and have no intention of being president" so we can all go "PHEEWWWWW"

I agree he is tackling most of the subjects people want to hear about captivating the peoples attention. Though he has no diplomacy or filter making him abrasive to masses. While this has affected him only temporarily in the past. I do feel he has a good chance of getting the nomination and running for president. Way to early to even guesstimate on the outcome yet only time will tell. I do see a lot of these candidates that have little to no following dropping off in the near future. Lets just face it if you can not even get mentioned in the buzz of the internet. How can you expect to be mentioned by the major news outlets you are wasting time and money.
