Donald Miller: The Hallmarks of a Great Mission Declaration

FaithBrand Mission. Say it loud.

It is not a statement. It’s a declaration.

I love what StoryBrand guru Don Miller teaches about Mission. He declares, “Without a robust mission, your story is going nowhere.”

“If you don’t remember it, it’s not guiding you. Most mission statements are a waste,” Miller moans.

Miller continues that most mission statements need to be more directional and understandable. They don’t align anyone. They are bland and unmemorable. They don’t increase productivity, introduce challenges, or define a clear destination.

Other than that, they’re not too bad. Yikes!

He says there are no separate mission and vision statements. It is one.

Miller demands a mission statement (I call it a declaration!) do 3 main things:

  1. It should introduce a challenge.
  2. It should define a destination.
  3. It should foreshadow the stakes.

Now, look at your Mission. How does it line up with Miller’s strict success criteria above?

Perhaps it’s time to throw it out and start over? Your Mission Declaration. Say it loud!
