The Domino Effect: An uncontrollable variable
Our conduct is frequently swayed by the unforeseeable or unmanageable reactions of others. We tend to take actions based on perceived responses, even if such guesses are not entirely accurate, leading us to behave in a way we wouldn't otherwise.
Various uncontrollable factors, such as the emotions, attitudes, and prejudices of the other person, may have a significant impact on our interactions. These variables may influence the individual's perception of our conduct and language. For instance, if someone is in a negative mood, their reaction to our interaction may be different than if they were in a positive mood.
"The Godfather" from 1972 shows Santino rushing to put an end to his sister's abusive and threatening husband, Carlo. Despite Santino's warnings to stay away from Connie, Carlo continues to mistreat her. When Santino hears his sister crying on the phone, he rushes over to her house with no thought of reason or logic. Santino's actions were impulsive, but he was unaware that Barzini was manipulating things to exploit the Corleone Family’s weaknesses. This demonstrates how external factors, such as others' perceptions, can also impact our behavior.
Though others' reactions can influence our behaviour, our choices are ultimately within our control. Despite external influence, we decide when and how we act, making us solely responsible for our actions. Being influenced by people or circumstances should not weaken our agency, but instead highlight the importance of making conscious choices.
Michael Corleone exemplifies the notion that one can exert control over their actions even in the face of uncontrollable factors. Although initially met with ridicule by Tom, his brother and the Caporegimes for his proposal to eliminate Solozzo and his deemed “untouchable” bodyguard, Captain McCluskey, Michael persistently pursued his goal. He demonstrated that he retained command over his decisions despite external pressures.
None of us were given a manual for life, and even if we were, we probably wouldn't use it. Imperfections are a natural part of being human, and it's perfectly fine to not have all the answers or be in total control. While we yearn to have complete agency over our lives, the truth is that external factors often influence our decisions and actions. Being aware of the variables and making deliberate decisions based on our values and beliefs is crucial. It allows us to lead a meaningful life that is not restricted by external factors. By doing this, we can break free from societal pressures and live an authentic life.

1 年I am of the opinion that we can reduce the impact of the external variables but cannot be 100% out of its grip and perview. While staying composed in a professional set up is important, it must also be ensured that adjusting our attitude to an unpleasant incident in professional life should not lead to a burst of emotions at home or in the dinning table (which is a continuation) where some may feel is ok to vent out the frustration and speak openly.
