The Domino Effect

The Domino Effect

Before I came to CIMBA , I heard nothing but wonderful things about professor Molly Rapert . I could not wait to take her Global Consumer course here in Paderno del Grappa. As my time at CIMBA comes to a close, I leave here in awe. Never did I imagine the life-changing impact this professor and this course could have on my life. This is why I have chosen to reflect on Molly’s teaching of the ‘Domino Effect.’?

Through this course I have gained a heightened global awareness, a deeper comprehension of international business, and insights into Chinese economics and life outside of the U.S. These subjects have broadened my perspective and encouraged me to pursue global learning upon my return home. While I could speak on each topic extensively, I have chosen to focus this article more towards a reflection on my personal growth. This past week, Molly shared some life lessons, including the concept of the ‘Domino Effect,’ which prompted deep introspection.?

While I have always gravitated towards structure and plans, my time studying abroad over the past four weeks has taught me to embrace spontaneity. Unexpected events like missed trains, inclement weather, and delays taught me to learn to appreciate the journey. Last weekend, I traveled to Rome with a group of friends I had never met before CIMBA. What was meant to be a 3-hour train ride turned into a 9-hour adventure due to a breakdown on the tracks. Despite the change of our plans and reservations, this unexpected journey became one of the highlights of my trip. We passed the time playing card games, trying new Italian snacks, and getting ready together on the train, ensuring we were all set to explore Rome as soon as we arrived. That weekend ended up being one of the most memorable experiences of my time abroad.?

While we each have some control over our personal narratives, life often throws unexpected events our way. Molly emphasized that every life event acts as a domino, leading us in a new way. Even if we resist or fail to understand some of these events, we should learn to embrace the journey and acknowledge the significance of each ‘domino.’ Not only do our experiences act as dominos, but the people we encounter along the way also play a part. You never know who you might meet and the impact they could have on your life.

I plan to apply this lesson not only into personal life but also in my professional and academic pursuits. As I continue in my career journey, I aim to appreciate each step along the way. Whether this be tackling a difficult course, navigating a challenging job interview, or resolving conflicts with coworkers, I will approach each experience with appreciation and eagerness to learn from the lesson it may have to offer. By embracing the journey, I believe I can grow both personally and professionally, and ultimately, achieve success in my endeavors. My time abroad has taught me how to appreciate each domino. As Molly said, “Think of this time as just one of many dominoes that might be pushing you in a new direction… or reinforcing the direction you are in.”

As I prepare to leave campus I am filled with immense gratitude for this experience. A heartfelt thank you to Molly Rapert for sharing your wealth of knowledge; you have expanded my perspectives, both professionally and personally. Thank you CIMBA for an incredible four weeks and a life-changing opportunity. Ciao!

What a sweet and generous post, Gracie Jay! I am delighted you chose Cimba and chose my Global Consumer course. You were instrumental in making this an outstanding experience for me in the classroom! Thank you for your work, diligence, and insight ... and I love reading this narrative! I've been blessed to have this experience here for 24 summers and I love my CIMBA family of students! I'm counting on you to keep in touch with me, share your experience with future students, and know that you always have me as a resource in whatever comes your way. I hope YOUR dominoes fall in a way that brings you more adventures, great health, and a joyful life! Grateful for you and the rest of room 17! Looking forward to our time on the thesis!
