The Domino Effect of Feedback
We bring people into our offices to provide feedback ... sadly its usually negative or constructive. Often, after the feedback is over we think it’s over but wait it's NOT even close to being over. Here is why:
- Employees often know their teammates go into the manager's office.
- When the employee comes back to his or her desk guess what happens? They all ask "what happened?"
- The employee begins to share the feedback received ... sadly its usually negative or constructive.
- The employees begin to challenge the employee? NO WAY! They jump in and commiserate with them.
- The employee then goes home and receives the 6 pm question: "How Was Your Day Honey?". This revisits the feedback all over again. Here is a thought to ponder does the spouse or significant other challenge their partner? NO WAY! They jump in and commiserate with them. We protect each other ... we don't take the view of our partner’s boss unless we have a death wish.
Now let’s summarize this. Does this mean we don t give negative or constructive feedback? No, but here is the MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION:
Are we giving as much if not more attention to the good stuff? Are we bringing in employees to raise & praise?
Now think of the aforementioned domino effect !
