Dominic Price is the 'Work Futurist' at Atlassian , which means he has the permission to deeply explore how we can and will work differently in the future. He grabs models and frameworks from all over the place, and creates mashups of values and behaviors for the modern working world.

In a datacentric work, Dom hasn't lost his appreciation for 'feel,' that accompanies active listening, and a focus on getting contributions from the entire team.

His Modern Workplace Manifesto was born from a dark chapter. Dom used the opportunity to figure out a way to direct his investment towards being a happy human. Go Wrong Stories

People don't want to hear the ‘go wrong’ stories. People are like ‘oh that’s cute’ tell us another story about how great you are. And I'm like, No, you need to understand the challenges that we overcame, the mistakes we made to understand how we got to where we got to - Dominic Price

Learn, don't blame. Chances are, no one died. Drop the phrase 'post mortem' from your vocabulary. Instead go with 'Blameless Retrospective' A blameless review of what went wrong, and using as broad a set of inputs and perspectives as possible, make the changes necessary to reduce the probability of it happening again. And then share with an even broader community outside the proverbial four walls of the company, to the benefit of many. The open source mindset, one of my favorite things to come out of the technology sector.

Take a Walk

Every time my team run an offsite, our first day is walks. Not work, not whiteboards, we've not got marker pens, I wouldn't even call it team building. We're going for a walk because we care about each other - Dominic Price

Create trust to unlock points of view and real exploration of alternatives, pros, and cons, without fear of retribution or feelings being hurt. Great strategy for better decisions, more contributions, deeper engagement. Win, win, win. From across the Pacific, an enlightened hour of pragmatic behaviors everyone can try.

Everyone's data-centric and you lean on the ‘F’ word, ‘Feel’. ‘How does it feel?’ - Jeff Frick

Certain types of people are looking for step function change, new markets, and undiscovered vistas. Others just keep slicing at that bone. A small portion of a fun conversation with an actual work Futurist. He's not looking at x improvement over y in z. He's looking to grow new forests.

Force Multiplier

A lot of people think about psychological safety in a team. You need psychological safety between teams and that is a damn site harder because they’re are different function, language, backlog, boss, goals or remit. But you're in the same organization and you're trying to ship the same value to a customer - Dominic Price

The serenity prayer applied, worry about the things you can control, worry less about the rest. Look for force multipliers by working to help others more productive.

Situational Leadership

Question - To what style of leadership do you prescribe? Answer - I'm not a fan of any of the religions, but the one that probably aligns the most is ‘Situational Leadership’, because it’s the one that has for me the most amount of empathy - Dominic Price

Servant Leadership, Service Leadership, Sustainable Leadership and now....Situational Leadership. Emphasizing context, because it always comes back to context. Don't be afraid of 'I don't know, I don't have the expertise here. Ask questions, and leverage your entire network to help solve problems.

The challenge of unlearning today is the thing that worked for me as a leader in 2018 for example. Celebrate them and then have a wake for them, because the environment in 2024 is different and they're irrelevant - Dominic Price

Give Permission

Every time you hire a really smart person, give them permission. Give them that trust to make changes. That comes with values like change, and nimbleness, but it can be exhausting. - Dominic Price

Customer Proximity

Your people have better proximity to customers than you have as a leader. So if they're saying 'Here’s something that needs to change', don't see them as a pain in the ass, see them as the canary in the coal mine that's about to save your life. Dominic Price

In a world filled with noise, it's never been more important to focus on the sources of signal, trusted filters, paths to the root cause. Listen actively. The answers are all around us if we listen. I have a Post-It note on one my monitors to remind me, 'Shut up and listen'

People and Machines

We've got an amazing opportunity as a society, as a community, and as business leaders to build a better future than the past, not that the past was bad, but I think we can do a damn sight better - Dominic Price

With great consistency, the leaders I talk to are very optimistic about the future. It'll be different, and it's a bit unknown and scary. And it doesn't sell as well as doom and gloom. And not to cast shade on the past....but 'We can do a damn sight better' to quote a friend.The future is bright.
