Domesticated by Convenience: Why We Need an Entrepreneurial Revolution to Regenerate Our World

As we stand at a crossroads in the 21st century, it's increasingly clear that our current path is unsustainable. We hear the calls to regenerate our agricultural soils, restore our oceans, replant our forests, and repair the damage we've inflicted on the natural world. But there’s another crucial element that often gets overlooked: we also need to regenerate our entrepreneurial mindset and spirit.

For too long, we’ve been domesticated by the convenience-driven economy. In our shift from hunter-gatherers to consumers, everything has become a matter of ease. The industries that serve us today have perfected their systems to make everything just a click or a short drive away. Groceries delivered to our doorsteps, gadgets arriving within hours, and entertainment available at the touch of a button. On the surface, this convenience seems like progress. But is it a long-term solution? Is it nurturing a sustainable way of life or trapping us in a cycle of consumption that’s increasingly harmful to our planet?

The Cost of Convenience

The “perfect” convenience we've created comes at a tremendous cost. Our soils are exhausted from industrial farming, our oceans are depleted from fishing and drowning in plastic, and our air and water are polluted by unsustainable practices. Yet, these symptoms of our environmental crisis mirror a deeper problem: we’ve lost touch with the innovative, adaptive, and resilient entrepreneurial spirit that once drove humanity forward.

As consumers, we’ve become passive. We no longer hunt or gather, and we’ve lost the spark that made us creators and innovators in our pursuit of making life easier. Businesses, too, have shifted focus—from serving communities to chasing profit above all. While convenience can offer comfort, it rarely fosters true resilience or long-term prosperity. The time has come to question this model.

A New Generation of Entrepreneurs Is Needed

We need a new wave of entrepreneurs who understand that business is not just a machine to generate profit but a tool to create prosperity for all. This new generation must redefine the purpose of business, integrating environmental stewardship and social responsibility into the core of their missions. Business must no longer be about exploiting resources, but about regenerating them—restoring the health of our soils, plants, water bodies, air, and human health.

What does this new entrepreneur look like? They are visionaries who recognise the interconnectedness of all things. They understand that regenerating the soil also regenerates communities, that cleaning up our oceans restores balance to ecosystems, and that improving human health means improving the planet's health. Their businesses are built not only for profit, but for the long-term wellbeing of all living beings on Earth.

The Holistic Shift We Need

This shift requires us to rethink how we define success in business. Instead of valuing only the bottom line, we must ask: How does this business contribute to the greater good? How does it protect and restore our natural environment? Does it prioritise the health and dignity of its workers and consumers? Does it give back as much as it takes?

We can no longer afford the luxury of convenience if it means sacrificing the health of our planet and future generations. It's time to embrace the challenge of creating businesses that regenerate rather than extract, that heal rather than harm. As entrepreneurs, as consumers, and as citizens of the Earth, we must be part of this transformation.

The Call to Action

The entrepreneurial mindset of the future is one of resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to regeneration. We need to reignite the innovative spirit that once allowed us to thrive as a species and apply it to the pressing challenges of out time. We are no longer passive consumers of convenience—we must become "active creators" of a sustainable and regenerative future.

In this new age of entrepreneurship, our goal is not just to grow; it is to heal. Not just to scale; it is to restore. The businesses we build must enrich life—not just for shareholders, but for everyone on this planet.

"From the paradigm of economies of scale to a new one of decentralization and economies of impact."

The time for action is now. The Earth cannot wait, and neither can we. Let’s work together to regenerate our soils, our oceans, our forests—and most importantly, our entrepreneurial spirit.

Great article leading to a new important perspective. Yet, different type of entrepreneurs is not enough since they do not work in an empty space. This needed shift is required also in all the entities participating in the entrepreneurship arena: education, funding, governments, organizations, businesses,......
