For Domestic Violence, Call 9-1-1 If You Can, Text If You Can't
The coronavirus pandemic is having a dramatic, visible impact on both our health and our livelihoods, but there are other impacts to our community that are equally as dramatic but not as visible. One of those is domestic violence.
Since March 16, when we began sheltering in place to combat COVID-19 and the pandemic, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office has seen a 46% increase in reports of a domestic disturbance or suspected domestic violence. One of the unfortunate consequences of the shelter-in-place order is that in many cases domestic violence victims are now more isolated than ever with their abusers.
That is why it is so important that the public knows that the many assistance and support programs for domestic violence are still available and operating during this time.
One of the most important of these programs in Santa Clara County is the Text to 9-1-1 service that we began last year. This program allows callers to send text messages to 911 dispatchers rather than speaking with them. It provides victims with the ability to get help silently. This can be crucial, especially if they are confined in a small residence with their abuser.
Another benefit of Text to 9-1-1 is it gives residents who are hearing or speech impaired a way to clearly communicate with emergency dispatchers.
So if you are facing a domestic violence or abuse situation, remember 9-1-1 remains available. Call if you can. Text if you can’t.
Our emergency dispatchers deserve our thanks every day. In most cases they are the actual first responder. It is their steady voice that directs police, firefighters, paramedics and other assistance to us in our time of need. As importantly, they are a reassuring presence that can help bring calm and prevent panic during the most stressful moments.
Their work is especially important during this time of extreme anxiety and uncertainty, and I am so grateful for it.
