Family and domestic violence (DV) and the gun violence epidemic are preventable problems in the United States, yet they still affect an estimated 10 million people by DV alone every year. The emotional trauma and fear caused by these tragedies have long-lasting effects, transforming lives in ways that most Americans cannot even imagine. It's a crisis that is destroying the lives of millions every year. Guns, often seen as tools of pleasure and power, are being misused, and their owners, the NRA, and DV perpetrators need to realize that the human body is not a toy for gaming or pleasure-seeking and abuse. Dr. Chand often cries in isolation because it has affected his personal life because of DV.

Domestic violence causes worsened mental (hard-to-treat depression, PTSD) and physical health, decreased quality of life, decreased productivity, and, in some cases, mortality.

Family and domestic violence is a common problem in the United States, affecting an estimated 10 million people every year.

Domestic and family violence includes economic, physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse of children, adults, or elders. Domestic violence causes worsened mental (hard-to-treat depression) and physical health, decreased quality of life, decreased productivity, and, in some cases, mortality.

Domestic and family violence can be difficult to identify. Many cases are not reported to health professionals or legal authorities. This activity describes the evaluation, reporting, and management strategies for victims of domestic abuse and stresses the role of team-based interprofessional care for these victims.

Objectives:

  • Identify the epidemiology of domestic violence.
  • Describe the various types of domestic violence, including physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse. Each type has its own set of signs and symptoms, and understanding these can help in early identification and intervention. Explain challenges associated with reporting domestic violence.
  • Review some interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and communication to identify domestic violence and improve outcomes for its victims.

These practices, rooted in mindfulness, have the potential to save lives and foster peace, health, and harmony in our tumultuous world. They can also empower us to guide our families, especially those with neurodiversity, through challenging times like elections, instilling a sense of hope and optimism. October is not just another month, it's domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). This is a time to engage, learn, and act.
