India's automotive sector is experiencing a surge in innovation, with leading manufacturers Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and Tata Motors achieving record-breaking patent approvals in the last fiscal year (2023-2024).
M&M Sets New Benchmark
M&M secured an impressive 674 patent approvals, marking their highest annual achievement. This milestone underscores the company's research and development (R&D) commitment.

M&M boasts a robust patent portfolio with over 1,185 granted patents across various regions. As of March 31, 2024, they had 193 pending applications and 2,212 filed patents. Their innovations include advanced engineering, electric tractors, manufacturing processes, electronics, powertrain technologies (internal combustion engines and electric vehicles), and vehicle mechanical systems.

Tata Motors Drives Innovation
Tata Motors also witnessed a historic year, receiving 333 patents – the highest number in their company history. This achievement brings their total granted patents to over 850.
The company's focus on innovation is further emphasized by its record-breaking number of patents (222) and design applications (117) filed in FY24. These filings encompass advancements related to key automotive megatrends like electrification, connectivity, sustainability, and safety. Additionally, the patents cover various vehicle systems like powertrain, suspension, brakes, and emission control.
