Hello solutions seekers! ?
This is just a small note to say thank you for reading The Solutionists.
In many ways, telling these stories and sharing them within our circles helps to elevate the work of young people who are fighting to make our world a better place.
As a one-woman band, it's been encouraging to see more and more people subscribe to the newsletter and reach out to share new stories and feedback about this publication.
The best part of my work is talking about change and telling stories from innovators who are making a difference. Feel inspired, stay informed, and be encouraged that there is positive change in our world, and it's not all doom and gloom.
Thank you for being solution seekers!
This week...
Catching An Electric School Bus ??
A company in San Francisco is planning to make 10,000 school buses electric over the coming years in order to help reduce air pollution and carbon emissions from diesel engines. They are already testing 74 buses in Oakland at a former industrial site.
These buses, which currently cater to special needs students, could eliminate 25,000 tons of harmful emissions, according to the company's CEO. They believe changing almost half a million diesel school buses across the US could reduce around 8.4 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year!

Young climate activists challenge the South Korean government ????
As a leader, if you don't have a plan to cut carbon emissions, you might want to develop one soon!
In its first-ever case in East Asia, climate activists challenged the lack of green policies in the country and won. The constitutional court ordered that the government needs to show what the country's climate goals are and actions to meet them between now and 2049, and a more ambitious target for 2030.
This was raised by about 254 plaintiffs and four court cases. One was an unborn baby when the case was filed. A reminder that we are never too old or too young to make a difference.
Related: Did you know that South Korea recycles about 98% of its food waste which transforms it into enough green energy to power about 20,000 households.

France Say No To Smartphones In School ??
The country is testing a smartphone ban on about 200 middle schools with the hope that this could spread to other schools nationwide. If successful, this ban will be implemented in all schools next year.
The move is aimed at reducing cyberbullying, screen time, and other issues that have been directly linked to these smart devices. In many other countries, there are now direct links that show the more time kids spend on these screen and on social platforms, the worse their mental health.
In the UK, there is also an organisation called SmartPhoneFree Childhood that is encouraging parents and school administrators to think differently about letting children have access to smartphones. Find out more here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0jftvd2

This weeks solution seeker ?? ????
You might have already come across this face. This week's solution seeker is Heman Bekele, laureate of TIME magazine's "Kid of the Year."
At just 15 years of age, his idea to use soap to help in the fight against skin cancer has the potential to treat and prevent a cancer that kills thousands of people every year. His interest in science started with a chemistry kit that he got on Christmas Day at the age of 7.
Heman, of Ethiopian heritage, has one of his goals as bringing down the cost of treatment and making it more accessible. He says it costs just under $9 US dollars to develop 20 bars of soap. He has earned the title of America's Top Young Scientist and, with it, a $25,000 prize.

International Literacy Day ??
8th September is International Literacy Day!
Literacy is a fundamental human right and a foundation that creates opportunities for acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, behaviours, and more. However, about 1 out of 7 children aged 15 lacks basic literacy skills, and millions of children, in general, struggle to read and write. This day celebrates people who are increasing literacy levels across the world and raises awareness about the issue.
Here are some projects that are helping kids and adults get better at reading:
????♀? Book Dash: South African volunteers write several books in one day and give them away to children for free!
?? SLUM School: A night school for children in Pakistan who have to work during the day due to illegal child labor.
??BootTok: A social media community on TikTok encouraging people to learn how to read.
???? Friendship: Flatpack classrooms in Bangladesh helping to increase literacy levels.
?? Daariz: An app for people in Somaliland helping nomadic communities learn how to read.
????Children Of Cameroon: A project in Cameroon helping to break barriers for indigenous communities.

Taiwan Blocks Animals Cruelty ???? ??
The Taiwan Ministry of Agriculture has banned the use of wild animals that are being held in captivity from participating in performances. This new directive will prevent companies from forcing wild animals to perform or interact with people. This includes animals like dolphins and tigers.
Going forward, any company wishing to hold or display wild animals will have to meet certain criteria to obtain a license. The activities involving wild animals must reflect their natural behavior, there must be evidence of educational significance, and it must promote an “emotional connection” between the people and animals.

More Kids In School!
According to Our World In Data, the number of children and adolescents who are not in school around the world is decreasing by nearly 40%. This report on primary and secondary education shows that there has been a drop from 390 million in 2000 to 244 million in 2023.
This is happening during a period where the global population of children has grown. Though the progress has been slow in the last 5 years, data shows that many more children are getting an opportunity to learn now than 20 years ago. https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/news/5924846
