What Happens to Your Resume After Hitting the "Apply" Button?

Job Seekers, after you hit the "Apply" Button, what happens to the resume? Where does it go? Here's what happens to 95% of the resumes as soon as they are submitted:

Why are 95% of all resumes immediately rejected? Job Seekers insist it's the "Sinister" ATS (Application Tracking System) which rejects resumes for "No Good Reason." Everyone is quick to blame the ATS for the reason why they keep getting rejected and ghosted. The empty feeling when you hear nothing after applying for a job is real.

The truth is the ATS is only a piece of software. Software which is desinged to look for key words in a resume to match the key words in the job posting. Businesses make a fortune selling software to scan resumes. Businesses also make a fortune selling software to get a resume through the ATS.

Companies spend a fortune to buy an ATS system. So the ATS is not going away.

The Challenge to getting an Interview Is Not the ATS

Then what is the challenge? Here is the answer. A person has to view a resume. Do you know how much time a recruiter spends looking at a resume?

You Have 6 Seconds!

A recruiter will spend an average of 6 seconds looking at a resume in order to make a decision to interview. Wait! Six Seconds. Yes the amount of time it took to read this sentence, the fate of your resume has been determined. What's the most likely outcome of your application if you only get a 6 second resume scan? Now do you see why getting an interview is a long shot?

Jobseekers, can your resume survive the 6 second scan test? The typical "Do it yourself" resume is going to fail the test.

This is where a professional resume writter comes to save the day. Next edition will go into the reasons why a professional resume writer is the best option.

Team Building - More Than Buying Pizza

Managers make the mistake that all they have to do to build a great team is to have "Team Building Events." I knew as soon as I saw a Manager schedule a "Team Builder." I was dealing with leadership incompetence. I did learn from these events. I learned what not to do. Even more disturbing for the manager, everyone else knew "Team Building Events" are just for show.

Building an engaged high performing team takes more than ordering pizza. It starts with building relationships and establishing trust. Once a relationship and trust are established, then you can begin to plan to make the needed changes to the organization.

In the first 90 days, I would sit down with the team members individually. This is a chance for them to tell their story and for me to tell mine. When a team member feels they are the most important person in these meetings, a bond begins to form.

Towards the end of the meeting I would ask them this question, "If they could change 3 things about how the organization does it's business, what would you change?" I then gave them an opportunity to spend time to think and we would meet again and talk further. This gives the team member the impression they are important to the success of the operation.

Each time we met afterwards, the meetings became less formal and more like a conversation between friends. This is the first sign of success. The foundation is being laid. We'll explore more about building a foundation for a "Winning Team." in the next issue.
