“Doing things differently”: ensuring we truly differentiate at Torque Law
Emma Whiting

When Tiggy Clifford and I started talking over a glass of wine or two about setting up Torque Law we spent a lot of time talking about ‘doing things differently’. Our gut feeling was that we could differentiate ourselves by setting up a specialist law firm which focussed on just one area: employment law. We felt that we could really get to know our clients and respond to what they wanted and what we thought was important as their advisers.
But in the early days of our business, saying that we were different felt like a bit of a cliché – isn’t that what every lawyer said who thought they should stand out?
Now that we’ve been up and running for 3 years, it feels as though we’ve a better idea of what our ‘different’ is really all about, something bought home to us last week when we were truly thrilled to be chosen as the Niche Law Firm of 2019 at the Yorkshire Legal Awards. In the words of the judges we were up against some ‘extremely strong candidates’ and we couldn’t have more respect for our fellow finalists. Our winning entry was singled out for our ‘clear dedication to our approach to client relationships’ – a reference to the client pledge we launched earlier this year – as well as ‘the quality of our work’. Recognition was given to our commitment to agile working practices which provide truly flexible working arrangements to female returners to law as well as our year long neurodiversity campaign, which “significant benefits businesses in the region”. Being named a “stand out firm” really was the icing on the cake.
At the end of the day, we still want to work with our brilliant and dedicated team to provide great advice to the fabulous clients who we genuinely enjoy working with, but Tiggy and I are honoured to be known for being able to do that in a bit of a different way.
I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
