Doing The Same Old Job Search Thing Leads To Long Term Unemployment

Doing The Same Old Job Search Thing Leads To Long Term Unemployment

When you're job searching while unemployed, don't fall into the trap of doing the same old thing.

It probably won't turn out well.

Most job seekers don't mean to do the same old thing, over and over ... and often don't even realize they keep doing this or how it effects their job search.

Here are some common examples of doing the same thing that you'll want to avoid in your unemployment job search:

  • Sending A Qualified (Average) Resume: A resume that portrays you as qualified is average in the eyes of the employer, underselling you. While you might have gotten your last job with an average resume, your resume undersold you for the jobs you really, really wanted (but didn't get). When you’re unemployed, average resumes just plain fail to get high quality job interviews. When employers have many qualified candidates to choose from, merely being qualified doesn't make the cut, especially when you’re unemployed. And if you are getting interviews, ask yourself … are they high quality interviews that help you advance, or low-quality ones that go nowhere?
  • Not Enough Resume And Interview Customization: The average resume gets only 15 minutes of customization. Worse, many candidates apply to jobs using a resume saved on a job board, automatic applications to job alerts by clicking submit or via your LinkedIn profile. 15 minutes doesn't give you enough customization to match enough criteria to get through Applicant Tracking Systems very often. Applying to job alerts by clicking submit with a saved resume shows employers you aren't even trying. You need to do more to get interviews when you’re unemployed. In the interviews you do get, you'll advance and get offers more often by customizing your interview answers to the hiring manager's current needs (the ones that aren't in the published job description).
  • Applying Online: You wouldn't believe how low your odds of success of landing a job are when you apply through job boards. I can show you, using the results of 2 studies published by major job boards themselves, that the average odds of success are over 100 times lower than you think - so low that they are nearly hopeless. That's because applying through job boards, company career pages or LinkedIn is a "fake" job search process, that conflicts with the real way hiring managers find their new hires, instead sending you through HR/recruiting (who don't make hiring decisions). You've been taught this fake process by outplacement, most career coaches/authors, and it's been supported by what HR departments tell you (attempting to inflate their power and intimidate you from reaching the real hiring decision makers).

These are all examples of the same old thing you were taught to do in job search and resume writing. These were always average strategies, but they fail miserably when you’re unemployed.
