Doing a lot with a little this holiday season

Last year, I joined the non-profit board of Brick by Brick. For the past 15 years, Brick by Brick Uganda (BBB) is working to create partnerships to improve education, health, and economic opportunity through innovation and community engagement.

I visited their operations in Uganda last month and was humbled by the good they do with so little. Their focus is on improving lives for babies, kids, and moms in the 500,000-person region they serve. They save lives, increase school attendance, teach teachers and midwives, reduce HIV, provide jobs (for locals as well as American student interns), and teach how to fish as opposed to just giving handouts. 

For those of you who love stats like me, BBB is proud to report:

• 79% maternal mortality reduction in eight years through BAMA
• 3000 HPIV vaccines this year (low-hanging cervical cancer preventative measure)
• 40 full-time mason jobs provided by BBB Construction, now a self-reliant, for-profit organization (see above: I joined the team)
• 9 primary schools (serving 4000 students) rebuilt in 15 years, providing clean water and increasing student enrollment 40%
• 14 school libraries organized through Lifelong Learning Program
• 20 schools now have light from a partnership with We Share Solar
• 5000 girls participated in BBB MyPads program and as a result stayed in school
