Doing Hard Things: Doubt is a Part of the Deal

Now one might think that someone who coaches others on how to stay out of mind drama when doing hard things would have no problem applying her own advice to herself.?
Nope.
This past March, I put almost everything else on hold, including my podcast, and began writing my book, Goal-Getter. Day-in and day-out, it has been the #1 thing on my daily to-do list.
I'd like to say that the writing is easy, but it's not.
There is not a day that goes by when I sit down to write that I don't think that what I'm writing is absolutely horrible and no one will want to read it.
Why am I telling you this?
Because I want you to know that everyone experiences doubt and mind drama when they do hard things.
Everyone.
It's actually a part of the deal.
You see, your primal brain (the ancient part of your brain that controls emotions and whose main motive is to keep you safe, alive, and lazy) hates it when you do hard things. It thinks that everything that isn't what you usually do is a risk.?
Doing something like writing a book, signing up to run a marathon, going back to school, or starting a business may not seem risky, but to your primal brain, it is.
So it sends you emotions like doubt, fear, confusion, and Self-Doubt Roadblocks like imposter syndrome, perfectionism, and comparison in an attempt to get you to stop moving yourself forward.
Now this may seem totally illogical, but we are talking about a part of your brain that used to call the shots back when cave dwellers roamed the earth and doing things out of the ordinary could result in death.

So when this happens to you (because it will whenever you leave your Comfort Cave), engage your 21st-century brain and override it.?
You know that writing a book or starting a business is highly unlikely to result in harm.? Act like it.
So doubt your doubt.
Ask yourself? 'what else could be true?'
And then get back to work.
You've got big goals and dreams to make happen, my friend. (And if you want to learn some of my cool mindset tricks, send me a DM.)

7 个月I can definitely relate to the book writing feeling Jen Laffin. I just love the fact that one day you can think what you've written is a piece of ?? and then the next day you think the exact same piece is ?? . Just goes to show there is no truth to what we think about our capabilities.
