Dogs in old age

We are all getting old. Unfortunately, this is the case much earlier in dogs:

For large breeds, senior age can start as early as 6 years.

At this point, a lot changes in the dog's body:

The four-legged friends have less energy; their appetite also changes often. Due to the changed metabolism, they often gain or lose weight. And the typical aches and pains of old age also show up. Osteoarthritis can make walking difficult, and dental problems also occur more frequently. In addition, your dog has to fight against a weak bladder and grey hair.

?Pay more attention to signs of illness in old pets and visit the vet more often.

Some behavioural changes are to be expected, such as insecurity or irritability. Your dog may also seek more or less contact or react less often. But very noticeable changes in behaviour can be a sign of dementia.

Treat your senior with respect. The old ladies and gentlemen often have completely new requirements to be able to cope with everyday life.

Your dog is old - what now?

First and foremost: see your doctor regularly. And be sensitive to your friend's changing needs. Your dog's health is no longer the best - and this requires more sophisticated care. This way, developing diseases can be detected early and the changes will be less stressful for your dog.

This can start with diet. Old dogs often need less energy, but the food must still contain sufficient minerals and vitamins. Special dog food for older animals can help. They may need more water too.

In addition, your senior is less persistent. Therefore, depending on his fitness, do shorter rounds. But do it more often, because the exercise is good for your dog and you can do justice to his weak bladder. It may be that your dog has to get used to the change. Give him time to get comfortable with the new routine.

Your household should be free of obstacles, whether this includes non-slip paths or ramps, so that the dog can move around freely. Additional brain teasers will also keep him mentally fit.

If your four-legged friend is looking for dogs his own age, some places have special groups for senior dogs. If your dog starts to be afraid of other dogs, or if playing with them becomes a lot less fun, a yellow ribbon can warn the other owners.

All in all, be considerate of his new needs. Then you will both do well in his new phase of life.

Growing old is different for every dog. Smaller ones stay fit longer, but with large breeds it often starts at the age of six. And life before that also determines the problems that can develop - for example, too much weight can increase the risk of joint disease.
