Does Your Team Have Same Buzz as the Matilda's?
The FIFA Women’s World cup has finished and it was an amazing tournament.? With 32 teams from around the world competing to be the best and spanning across both Australia and New Zealand over the past month there has been plenty of activity.? Spain defeated England in the finals and the energy of the crowd and excitement of women’s soccer has never been stronger.
Unfortunately, the Matilda’s did not make the finals and lost in the match for 3rd place.? And the team Captain, Sam Kerr had a frustrating calf injury that saw her miss all the opening games and only be able to play in full for the last 2 games. What a great job she did as a leader to encourage her team and work hard to overcome her injury and find a way back onto the pitch to help out—with an incredible goal against England (I reckon goal of the tournament—vote for it here )
With the Women’s World Cup now finished, it is incredible to see the buzz that the Matilda’s have generated.? Given all the media you would have thought that they won the tournament, rather than taking 4th place!? The record crowds that they attracted to the stadiums was impressive and they also achieved the highest ever television audience for sport with over 11million Australians tuning in—which is more than 43% of the population—wow!!? Everyone is hoping that this leads to more recognition (and salary) for women athletes across the country.
The comradery and the team spirit that the Matilda’s demonstrated was incredible.? When their captain, and one of the best players in the world could not play, they individually and collectively stepped up.? Attending most of their matches in person allowed me to experience and feel the energy that they had generated with the crowd—it was a massive buzz!
So, when someone works with your team what do they experience?? Internally do other departments get a ‘buzz’ when working with your people?? Also, if any of your people work with customers do they experience this buzz?? Are all of the staff on your team great team players that support and challenge one another to compete on a global level?
Many times, we know what it is like when a team is successful (or is not!).? The challenge for many leaders is what do they need to do to create a positive team culture to create the buzz for others to experience.? When I was getting my Master’s Degree my Thesis was on ‘Why Many Teams Fail’ and what needed to be changed to ensure a work team was high performing (not just average!).
