Does your resume represent you properly? Or is it just an essay comprised of job descriptions and skills? Does your resume say choose me?

Does anybody enjoy the work of building a sustainable career anymore?? Many career-oriented professionals have worked so hard to be recognized for their talents that they have forgotten the whole point of building a career. Or does anybody no longer enjoy being recognized for the work involved in creating a sustainable career?

We push so hard and take on so much to prove that we are loyal to the company and are consummate team players who are serious about our linear, straight-line-up careers that we have drained our reservoir of drive, self-actualization, and ambition.

Many professionals have recently experienced their first layoff in their long-battered careers. The surprise layoff forces a change in the approach to building a sustainable career that can be surprisingly liberating or devastatingly debilitating.

The layoff sting can cause the laid-off workers to evidence an intense desire to maintain some hustle, which may metamorphose into a frantic ten “easy apply” applications at a time approach to creating job applications. Others institute a maddening connection collecting scheme in case they need a referral, a reference, or help job searching – thereby creating their own ‘job search hustle.’?

A layoff can cause even those who escaped the scalping and remain at the company to realize it isn’t just the dogged determination and hustle approach to building a career that matters, but the multifaceted layoff preparation plan they failed to put in place that now matters.

?A layoff can cause even those who escaped the scalping and remain at the company to realize it isn’t just the dogged determination and hustle approach to building a career that matters, but the multifaceted layoff preparation plan they failed to put in place that now matters.

?The ‘work hustle’ is working all the time and seeking your self-actualization and identity there, plus having a side hustle to plug any gaps as you configure yourself as an instrument of throughput and career-building productivity.

So, where should a person get their sense of career achievement and appreciation if not from work? Where do the people who escaped a “workplace culling of the herd” direct their unstoppable competitiveness in their altered and impermanent work environment? Are you one of the salvaged employees who no longer feels safe and is frantically applying to ten, just just-in-case jobs a day? Have you taken up one-stick drumming or exuberant indoor rock climbing to keep busy while you wait for responses to your job applications or for your chums to deliver referrals? All the while wondering if the right job would ever come and rescue you.

A layoff sting can cause the laid-off to begin a frantic approach to job searching that can last for months. It can also cause the employees who are not affected to reconsider their future at the company. The ‘work hustle,’ as in working all the time and seeking your self-actualization and identity there, is one way to hide the fact that you may be insecure about your future at your current job. Where does a person get their sense of career achievement and appreciation if not from a stable work environment??

The sting from the layoff sting can cause laid-off workers to opt for an intense, frantic approach to job searching, causing them to accept the first offer they receive or even the wrong one. Having a side hustle or accepting a part-time job can plug gaps of inactivity during your new job search. Where should a person get their sense of career achievement and a job well-done appreciation if not from steady, fulfilling work?

A layoff can cause workers, even those who escaped the layoff scalping and remained at the company, to realize that building a career at that firm may not deliver the rewards they envisioned. The ‘work hustle,’ as in working all the time and seeking your self-actualization and identity, is one of the ways workers avoid acknowledging that they are dissatisfied with their job and/or career.
