Does your organization need some Indigenous Relations Consulting?

Navigating Indigenous Relations can be a hard task but can open new opportunities for your organization. To get started you need an Indigenous person or consultant that is willing to help you, then you must be willing to make internal changes in your organization, and then you will be ready to make external connections into the Indigenous economy.

Indigenous Relations Consultant

I’m a member of the Bigstone Cree Nation in Northern Alberta. After experiences with “bad bosses” I dedicated my life to Human Resources and improving workplaces. I returned to university as an adult student and earned my Batchelor of Management in HR and Labour Relations from the University of Lethbridge while working full-time. I’m now a CPHR Candidate working to become a full CPHR.

In addition to general HR Consulting, I also do Indigenous Relations Consulting. I facilitate change in businesses that help them become Indigenous sensitive, so they don’t miss out on important opportunities within First Nations communities.

Easy Internal Changes

There are some easy “low hanging fruits” that your organization can implement to start the journey to becoming Indigenous sensitive. These are no or low cost!

  1. Start performing a Land Acknowledgment at meetings of 3 or more.
  2. Put a local Land Acknowledgment on organization e-mail signatures.
  3. Put a general Land Acknowledgment on all websites and major advertising.
  4. Commit to having 5% indigenous employees.
  5. ?Book a KAIROS Blanket Exercise for your organization.

Implementing these will help teach your organization about Indigenous issues and create a better work environment for Indigenous employees, customers, or clients. As implied, these are the first steps in the journey but will give your organization a higher profile in Indigenous markets.

External Connections

After you have made some internal changes with your organization then you will be in a better place to start reaching out. Outreach like this can take more time, and you should have a guide to help you in the process. This is where an Indigenous Relations Consultant can get you in the door with an introduction, networking, or just by doing the right things to be noticed by Indigenous people.
