Exploring the Capabilities Quadrant of the Innovation Maturity Index
As we continue our exploration of the Innovation Maturity Index (IMI), we’ve already discussed how strategy and culture promote innovation, and how organizational structure sustains it. Now, it’s time to focus on the final piece of the puzzle—Capabilities. This quadrant is all about ensuring that your organization has the right people, knowledge, tools, and resources to not only spark innovation but to sustain it over time.
The Capabilities Quadrant: Equipping Your Organization for Sustained Innovation
Innovation doesn’t happen by chance—it requires a deliberate investment in the capabilities that drive it. The Capabilities quadrant of the IMI helps you assess whether your organization has the skills, expertise, knowledge management systems, partnerships, and performance measurement tools in place to turn innovative ideas into reality.
Let’s break down the key components of this quadrant:
1. Skills and Expertise
At the heart of any successful innovation effort are the people behind it. Does your organization have the necessary skills and expertise to drive innovation forward? It’s not just about having smart, capable individuals—it’s about having the right mix of skills across your teams, from technical expertise to creative problem-solving and strategic thinking.
Imagine a healthcare organization that’s committed to digital transformation but lacks the in-house expertise to navigate the complexities of new technologies. Without the right skills, even the best ideas can falter. The IMI’s Capabilities quadrant would highlight this skills gap, suggesting areas where investment in training or hiring could make a significant difference.
When your teams have the right skills and expertise, they’re equipped to tackle innovation challenges head-on, turning ideas into actionable solutions.
2. Knowledge Management
Innovation thrives on knowledge—how it’s created, shared, and applied within your organization. Effective knowledge management ensures that insights, best practices, and lessons learned are accessible across the organization, so teams can build on existing knowledge rather than reinventing the wheel.
Consider a scenario where a pharmaceutical company has multiple innovation projects running simultaneously, but there’s little communication or knowledge sharing between teams. Valuable insights are siloed, leading to duplicated efforts and missed opportunities. The IMI’s Capabilities quadrant would identify this as a key issue, recommending stronger knowledge management systems to facilitate better information flow.
Good knowledge management ensures that everyone in the organization has access to the information they need to innovate effectively, making it easier to build on past successes and avoid repeating mistakes.

3. Partnership Capabilities
Innovation doesn’t always happen within the four walls of your organization. Often, it’s driven by partnerships—whether with other companies, research institutions, or industry experts. But does your organization have the capabilities to establish and manage these partnerships effectively?
Let’s say your organization is eager to collaborate on a new healthcare initiative but lacks the experience or resources to manage external partnerships. This can lead to misaligned goals, communication breakdowns, and ultimately, stalled projects. The IMI’s Capabilities quadrant would highlight the need to strengthen partnership capabilities, ensuring that your organization can leverage external relationships to enhance its innovation efforts.
Strong partnership capabilities allow your organization to tap into external expertise, resources, and networks, amplifying your innovation potential.
4. Performance Measurement
Innovation is not just about generating ideas—it’s about measuring their impact. Performance measurement capabilities are crucial for assessing the success of innovation initiatives and ensuring that they deliver the desired outcomes. But does your organization have the tools and processes in place to track and evaluate innovation performance?
Imagine a health system that launches several innovative programs but has no clear metrics for success. Without performance measurement, it’s difficult to know what’s working and what isn’t, making it challenging to make informed decisions about future investments. The IMI’s Capabilities quadrant would reveal this gap, recommending the development of robust performance measurement systems.
Effective performance measurement ensures that your innovation efforts are continuously evaluated, refined, and optimized, leading to better results over time.
Why the Capabilities Quadrant Matters
The Capabilities quadrant is critical because it sustains innovation by ensuring that your organization has the right tools, resources, and expertise to turn ideas into impactful solutions. While strategy, culture, and organizational structure provide the foundation, it’s the capabilities within your organization that bring innovation to life.
By assessing these components, the IMI helps you identify whether your organization is equipped to sustain innovation in a meaningful way. It highlights areas where you might need to invest in new skills, improve knowledge management, build stronger partnerships, or develop better performance metrics.
Moving Forward: Building the Capabilities to Sustain Innovation
If the Capabilities quadrant of the IMI has revealed some areas for improvement, now is the time to act. Start by investing in the skills and expertise that your teams need to innovate effectively. Strengthen your knowledge management systems to ensure that information flows freely across the organization. Build your partnership capabilities to leverage external resources and expertise. And finally, implement performance measurement tools to track the impact of your innovation initiatives.
With the right capabilities in place, your organization is not just equipped to innovate—it’s positioned to sustain innovation over the long term.
Curious about how your organization’s capabilities stack up? Let’s connect and explore how the Innovation Maturity Index can help you build the capabilities that drive and sustain innovation at every level.

1 个月I appreciate breaking down the capabilities into different contributing factors. Too often, when talking about capabilities, we just try to hire the right people or "train up" the existing ones. But there are many other factors, and options. Partnership capabilities is an area where people don't actively consider often enough, and as much as I say that it's essential to your value proposition you should at least aspire to own it, you can't be good at everything.
