Does your goal have a ROLE to set you on a roll?

Does your goal have a ROLE to set you on a roll?

You know what it's like when, responsible people like you

  • well aware that goal-setting is to live your dreams but
  • less care or very casual while creating your goals, and then
  • stare at the goals that look alien while implementing, and then
  • glare at the goals with anxiety while delivering incomplete goals and then
  • tear with regret in the last minutes of your life for NOT living your dreams and

you know what it's like when.

But, are you aware of the immediate consequences if you don't solve this problem?

  1. You will be in dark about your future without knowing how to track, and
  2. You will have physical ailments like chronic back, high blood pressure, and
  3. You will have emotional issues like anxiety disorders, depression, frustration, and
  4. You will feel irritated at all time on a regular basis and even you cannot switch off, and
  5. You will fast slash your future dreams to crash out abruptly thus feeling dead while alive

Now, the question to you is,

When and How can you solve it?

Let me help you with the 2-way S.M.A.R.T approach to resolve this problem i.e.

  1. Convert your goal to a S.M.A.R.T goal with well-known S.M.A.R.T framework and
  2. Define the S.M.A.R.T role to your S.M.A.R.T goal so that it will grab your attention

Firstly, Convert your goal to a S.M.A.R.T goal:

The SMART in S.M.A.R.T framework stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

Most people falter while defining A and R of S.M.A.R.T to a goal:

For A (Achievable), they will just choose goal which is well with in their comfort zone, instead of taking an ambitious goal that pushes out of their comfort zone, and

For R (Relevant), they will start with some random goal, instead of taking the goal from 'where they want to be in future'.

To explain S.M.A.R.T in brief,

Let me start with R in S.M.A.R.T because there is a need to identify the relevant goal first, so that, we make this relevant goal to be specific, measurable, achievable and time-bound.

R - Relevant - The goal you pick cannot be random, it should be relevant i.e.

a Goal is NOT something to get TO from 'where you are now?', but
a Goal is something to come FROM 'where you want to be in future?'.

Let's take one relevant goal from my sample goals (mentioned in the image of this article).

One of the future Goal: I want to be recognized as 'THE EXPERT' in Consulting in 5 years from now (i.e. Dec 2027).

Now, to break down this goal I need to come up with what can be done in year 2023.

Goal 1 (derived from above Goal): In year 2023, I want to start inspiring people by writing articles in Social media

S - Specific - Have Clarity in your goal

  • Goal 1: In year 2023, I want to start inspiring people by writing articles on Quality and Automation, in one social media platform, 'LinkedIn'

M - Measurable - Helps in tracking the progress of the goal and when you reach the finish line

  • Goal 1: In year 2023, I want to start inspiring people by writing one new article on Quality and Automation, posted every week in one social media platform, 'LinkedIn'.

A - Achievable but Ambitious- Set an achievable but ambitious goal which pushes/ break the boundaries of your comfort zone.

  • Goal 1: In year 2023, I want to start inspiring people by writing one new article going deep dive in my related skills (Quality, Innovation, Implementation, Automation, Motivation), posted every week in one social media platform, 'LinkedIn'

T - Time-based - An expected end date can help you provide motivation and prioritise your work.

  • Goal 1: In year 2023, I want to start inspiring people by writing one new article going deep dive in my related skills (Quality, Innovation, Implementation, Automation, Motivation), posted on Friday of every week CONSISTENTLY in one social media platform, 'LinkedIn', so that I will share 52 articles in 52 weeks in the period Jan 01, 2023 to Dec 31, 2023.

Secondly, Define the S.M.A.R.T role to your S.M.A.R.T goal to grab your attention:

"If you want to be happy,?set a goal that commands?your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes." -?Andrew Carnegie.

Just like, you have a role as a citizen/ family person/, a ROLE is needed for your goal so that it can grab your attention to get the goal done 100% in time with quality.

Let me simplify the role in 5-step S.M.A.R.T technique,

The goal has a S.M.A.R.T role if you believe the achievement of the goal,

S - Sets you apart from the crowd

Example:

  • Is it an opportunity to standout in the crowd with significant achievement?
  • An opportunity to work on new processes/ tools/ technologies, etc?

M - Maximises your Performance

Example:

  • Does it push you to break the boundaries of your comfort zone?

A - Accelerate your current/ future goals

Example:

  • Does it lead to harder work or higher work?
  • Example: The higher work like 50% increase in quality, 20% increase in productivity, new innovations, etc.

R - Results in long-time relationship with your Vision

Example:

  • Do you celebrate the big future relationship with this goal?
  • Are you feeling happy or feeling boring or forceful or not worthy of your time?

T - Transforms you from the current version of you to the next best version of you

Example:

  • Does it change any of your behaviours to show-up better?

In case, if your goal fail to fit in any one or more of the 5-step S.M.A.R.T role then it is time to change it and CHOOSE a worthy goal.

Now, it's time to define the Role of Goal 1 so that, it will grab my attention to ensure I will accomplish it in time with quality.

The ROLE of this Goal 1, is to,

(S) - Set me apart from the crowd in terms of the improved communication in both speaking and writing skills.

(M) - Maximise my understanding while writing the article and learning from the different perspectives of various people in social media.

(A) - Accelerate my contribution to society in terms of higher work which enables the new graduates with a jump start to their career, and leaders to find their next best version.

(R) - Result in increase in my Visibility to the number of users in Social media by increasing the number of connections, which in turn will result in Credibility and Profitability in future.

(T) - Transform my current understandings into deeper understandings in various topics so that it will help in authoring books and speaking in bigger conferences in future to help me recognized as "THE EXPERT" by Dec 2027.

The Result:

With 2 way S.M.A.R.T approach by

  • Creating a S.M.A.R.T goal and
  • Defining a S.M.A.R.T role to grab your attention

you will be on a roll, achieving your meaningful goals easily, effectively and powerfully.

Are you willing to set a ROLE to your GOAL so that you will be on a ROLL?

Excellent.?

Madhusudan here… reminding you 3 things:

  1. Prioritise the goal from 'where you want to be in future'.
  2. Based on the S.M.A.R.T role, choose your goal by asking 'is this Goal worthy of ME'?.
  3. Care your dreams while creating goals so that, you will

  • spare your attention while implementing and
  • flare your progress while tracking regularly and
  • share your proud moments while delivering your results.

"To join the top 1% you have to do what the other 99% won't" - Leonardo Dicaprio

Thank you.
