DOES YOUR CAREER HAVE STEERAGE-WAY?

DOES YOUR CAREER HAVE STEERAGE-WAY?

Director John Huston’s classic 1951 film African Queen, starring Humphry Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, contains a key scene where their boat’s engine fails as they travel down the river. When Hepburn asks Bogart why they can’t just let the river’s flow take them forward, Bogart tells her it is because they need ‘Steerage-way’. Unless they move faster than the water’s flow, their rudder won’t work and they won’t be able to steer the boat.

Applying this concept of steerage-way to your career means it is insufficient to ‘go with the flow’. You must move faster than others if you want to steer your career in the direction you want.
