Does your business need an infusion of creativity? Try Barbapapa!
Susan Elford
I help multi-passionate women build the career or business they dream of so they can feel fulfilled at work and at home. Founder, The Aligned Leader and the Aligned Business Collective.
Last week, during one of the monthly mastermind pods that I lead inside of the Elevate Your Business small business community, a member raised the question about developing the next generation of their business plan to accommodate the growth and the vision they have for their growing business. We first spoke of tackling this business plan question in a linear fashion - creating lists and structure so we could plan for the anticipated growth and growing team step by step in a logical fashion.
But what happened next wasn’t quite so logical. As we’re coaching and masterminding, the use of metaphor was brought in. What does the “problem” at hand also look like? How can we use the symbolism of something seemingly completely different and unrelated to bring additional clarity to the problem?
“This reminds me of Barapapa,” I said. “Remember him? He could change into whatever shape was needed to solve whatever problem - that’s what you want your business to do!.”
I was greeted by blank stares by half the members (too young to remember Barbapapa), and laughter by the others who got it right away. What the heck does Barbapapa have to do with your business? But it worked. The analogy worked. Barbapapa is a character from a children’s television series that I watched when I was a little girl, and this pink creature could change shape so he could help his friends with whatever was needed at that moment in time.
Just like my client’s business - it can change depending on the situation needed - the right team members, the right topics, the right tools and the right design can solve any problem. It doesn’t always have to look a certain way. Creating bespoke solutions for unique problems is what this client does best.
This analogy brought relief as the bespoke approach works best for this client. It didn’t have to be a linear solution.
Look what can happen when you apply a creative mindset and a coach approach to traditional business problems.? The client gets to create what feels like a unique approach while having a model to show the way.?
What could Barbapapa do for your business or career? ;-) Only you can answer that.

Learning to Love Yourself: The Steps to Self-Acceptance, The Path to Creative Fulfillment by Gay Hendricks.
This month I’m listening to Learning to Love Yourself by Gay Hendricks. I have been an admirer of Hendricks for some time, with his ground-breaking book The Big Leap that has earned its place as a staple in my library of recommendations. The path to self-acceptance is a hard one. We’re exploring this concept inside The Aligned Business Collective this month as we explore what self-worth does to our business and how that ceiling can put a ceiling on your success. OUCH! It’s true. What you believe is possible… and what you don’t believe is also possible. Which do you choose? Read this book to help you expand your possibilities. I’m right there with you.?
