Does your business have an operating system?

Does your business have an operating system?

As the business World evolves, as you add new employees the ability for your organization to march to one beat of the drum is huge. Yet, so often that is not the case.

Here are some of the common challenges I see and hear-

  1. No written processes.
  2. Little to zero meeting rhythm.
  3. No KPI's or Key Performance Indicators.
  4. Nobody knows the business vision, goals and purpose.
  5. Outdated technology that no longer supports the business appropriately.

Now, I could go and on. I picked the most common examples. In one way or another they are all somewhat interconnected. I think we can all do much better in that arena.

One way of doing things

At this point I will mention EOS, it's been around sometime, if you have not checked out his book Traction then I highly recommend you start there.

My article most certainly is not an advertisement for the EOS system however it does speak to having one common way of doing things, that allows you to hold people accountable for, build KPI's and prevent multiple people in your organization all just doing their own thing!

So many times in business how we serve our clients, build proposals etc is all in employees and leaders heads. You need one system that works for ALL.

Now, whether it's EOS, Sixsigma or your own built systems and processes ONE system for everyone is critical.

What gets measured get's DONE!

You will find various quotes on this topic from Peter Drucker to others, however it's pretty simple. Any business needs KPI's to understand if you are on or off track.

I say all the time to people, even the car has a gas gauge. It is almost impossible to hold someone accountable if you do not have solid metrics in place to measure success or failure.

If you have no KPI's right now, then start with just a few. Chat with your team to build some additional ones or new ones to track success. My recommendation here is to break apart your metrics from sales, production and finance for example.

And keep building them too, don't go too crazy. I think over analyzing hurts too many business, however build meaningful ones that help you as the leader and your employees become more successful.

Start today in your business, the return on investment in the long term will be huge.
