The World Cup began last week, and it is a very important event for football fans, but this year has captured the attention of many others because it is the first time that the World Cup is taking place in an Arab country, which is Qatar, as approximately 2.9 million tickets have been sold, this is what has excited many people to watch this year's games, particularly Arabs and Gulf countries.
Many matches, however, will be broadcast during business hours or late at night. Employees who are tired from watching the World Cup with their friends at night or who want to watch games while working may have an increase in unplanned absences, which can have a negative impact on business productivity.
In a study conducted by Gulf Talent portal to determine the impact of World Cup matches on employees' time and work productivity, it was discovered that employers in the Gulf countries are dealing with a high rate of employee absence, which causes a significant slowdown in their operations.
According to the study, 77% of employees plan to watch at least a few matches, 41% plan to follow the matches during working hours, a third expects permission, and one in six plans to watch the matches secretly by streaming them live on computers or smartphones.
Other employees stated that if they requested a full day of annual leave, left early, or claimed illness, they could watch games during work hours.
This is to be expected, especially since football is an emotional sport with Arab teams competing, which attracts a large number of followers and fans.
Junior employees are not the only ones who are interested in the games. Many managers planned to watch the games during work hours as well.

- Think about showing matches.
It might be worth showing some of the matches at work if they are broadcast on working days. Make it clear that you will need to compensate for lost time. Participating in the World Cup may increase engagement and productivity!

It is critical to establish a solid absence management procedure. Prior to the start of the world cup, it may be beneficial to remind employees of the leave policies. HR should be aware of when matches will be broadcast so that they can plan accordingly.

It is a good idea to establish necessary cover levels and keep track of time so that employees can use their leave as substitute time off. Additionally, ensure that employees working from home understand that the same office procedures apply to them during the World Cup, and develop a strategy for monitoring this.
