Does Workplace Loyalty Still Exist?

Workplace loyalty is currently suffering. Job tenure has become transactional, a noticeable change from former times when employees stayed put until retirement age. Today's high job-leaving rate has created a dynamic labor market, and employers say they feel the pinch.

Everything associated with work and the workplace is being reassessed. Workers are reevaluating or renegotiating their contracts or compensation with their current employers, from salaries and types of projects to whether they are currently interested in hybrid or on-site work options. This ongoing reassessment by their employees is forcing employers to make more of an effort to explain available career options and pay attention to their employees' career and feedback needs if they seek to keep employees they currently have.

To keep employees with the company, it takes more than just working on the right project and having workplace flexibility. Career advancement and, admittedly, improved compensation are now the significant drivers. Even productive, well-treated employees may jump to another company if offered better projects, improved compensation, and an acknowledgment of their value.

?Employees who feel engaged, acknowledged, and productive opt to stay at their current employer. The notion of co-workers working as a unit and striving together is often upended by a layoff or employees leaving because they received a better offer or work environment. Currently, workers appear to be less invested in the companies they work for. They are more concerned with whether the company, the work, and the compensation will improve their lives and contribute to their long-term career goals.

The effect of misnamed layoffs meant to pose as restructuring and re-org can cut to the core, as the employees who were not laid off watch their firmer colleagues move on to better and more lucrative opportunities. The consequence is that the remaining talent may begin to see their tenure with their company as transactional and not worth the investment. Layoffs can upend the loyalty piece, as the lucrative soft landing of the layoff casualties challenges the lucky me feeling of the remaining employee.

As a Resume Writer and Career Strategy Consultant, I have noticed the increase in the acknowledgement of career stagnation and self-flogging by clients who decide to leave of their own accord. Some have worked at the same company for years, and they worry that they may have reduced their marketability. Others have had the same job title or responsibilities for five or more years. So, while their responsibilities may have been increased or reshaped to meet the company's needs, their compensation has lagged and not kept up with the market because their compensation is based on their job title.

?Many long-tenured careerists are rethinking their priorities. As a result, company tenure and job continuity at the same company are no longer at the top of their personal AND career goals.

Even productive, well-compensated employees may jump to another employer if their value to the company is acknowledged. That is why feedback is so important.

Loyal employees are more likely to provide excellent service to customers, which can lead to higher customer satisfaction and, therefore, more sales and revenue.

Well said JPR. This is so true: "Some have worked at the same company doing the same job for years, and they worry that they may have reduced their marketability. While their responsibilities may have been increased or reshaped to meet the company's needs, their compensation has lagged and not kept up with the market." ??
