Does what you wear make sense?
On Sunday, January 17th of 2021, I posted a picture of what I was wearing to Mass. I was relatively new to Instagram and this was still in the heart of Covid, when dressing up was something most weren’t doing.
When the next Sunday rolled around, at I’m guessing 8:35 am (because by 8:45 am I’m too busy yelling? - I mean assertively calling - for my oldest daughter to get downstairs and in the van for the 9 am start time) I snapped another picture. Before I knew it, I realized I could keep this weekly habit going.
After two years and a few months, I’m still at it, and this past weekend I hit a milestone. My 100th Sunday Mass outfit. Here it is….
Don’t be too impressed.?
First off, this is easy for me to do. I’m literally taking a picture of what I’m wearing and I can do it quickly. Also, because it’s Sunday morning, I have the 5 or 10 minutes to take the picture and post it.
Second, I have the wardrobe for it, as one would expect. Not only that, but third, this is an easy way for me to market myself and what I can offer.
The point I would like to make is this: How we dress powerfully affects and reflects what we are doing with our lives.??
I use these following 3 statements to guide my point:
#1 If everything is important, nothing is important
#2 If everyone is important, no one is important
#3 How we do anything is how we do everything?
Take a casual glance at how people dress in your world.?
Do you get the sense they are doing important things (#1)? Do you get the sense they are doing these things with people they feel are important (#2)? Do you get the sense they are striving and growing and looking to better themselves, realizing the small things matter (#3)?
Spoiler Alert…
My weekly posts are more for me than anyone. They hold me accountable. They remind me of what is truly important. They merge what I do professionally with what I do personally.?
If I am not going to dress up for something truly important, for someone who is truly important, and with others who are truly important, when will I dress up?
I apply this same logic to professional work.?
I think of attorneys, executives, physicians, bankers, wealth managers and business owners. Then I think of leaders who are responsible for developing the next tier.??
Do any of theses folks think what they do is important? Do they think they’re doing it with, and for, people that are important??
I know they do.? And if you allow me to be so bold, based on what they earn, whether or not they know it, the market tells us what they do is important.?
It takes courage to apply what I am inferring.?
I think of the mid-level professional, wearing a sportcoat for the first time to the weekly team meeting. I think of the new board member, showing up in a suit and tie and sticking out like a sore thumb.?
Those closest to you will be the first to notice. And there’s a good chance they’ll say something. If they don’t, trust me, they’re thinking it.?
Let them.??
You better believe my family made fun of me every week with my posts. It probably took six months before the joking stopped. Guess what? They don’t make fun of me anymore and I’m proud of what that says.?
And what does it say to me?
Life is a gift. We can keep this center by knowing what is important, who is important, and taking interest in the small things.? What I choose to wear helps me make this real and keeps me on the right path.?
Happy Dressing.
We have become a sloppy nation. A sloppy workplace and workforce in many ways. We expect the well dressed attorney or physician, but why don't we expect it for ourselves? It's funny that when our team dresses up for a meeting or for a client visit, they are here earlier, more talkative, and better prepared. Because they care. So, a great reminder Tim. And no better time to do that than on a Sunday morning—before you step in front of the Big Boss. ??
Love this habit and accountability Tim! It’s what makes you great!
