does our ability to see, make us blind?

does our ability to see, make us blind?

Dear you,

I decided to re-watch See, an apple TV series starring Jason Momoa, this holiday. I watched how blind people navigated the world, fought in wars, and did some really spectacular things, especially Baba Voss. However, his son, who had eyes and could see, didn't know how to fight. The boy really annoyed me, to be honest. But it's just a personal vendetta I have with the character. Anyway, one key thing Baba Voss said made me think:

"Think like a blind man; your eyes betray you" - Baba Voss.

I went down a rabbit hole listening to the interviews of visually impaired people Apple brought to the show, and just visually impaired people in general, how they see and navigate the world. I realized that their other senses were heightened. It made me wonder:

What if we do not develop our senses to their full potential because all our senses work? Can I listen better and hear microsounds like cats? Would my ability to listen help me move in stealth mode like cats? Would I be able to sense things better? Smell better? Taste or feel better? Do my eyes deceive me? How many times have I looked without seeing? What have I missed because one of my senses deceived me? What parts of my body have I developed or underdeveloped? It made me think about Larmack's theory of use and disuse which states that?when certain organs become specially developed as a result of some environmental need, then that state of development is hereditary and can be passed on to progeny. He explains it through the giraffe's elongated neck and the penguin's reduced wings. You can read about it?here.?

I realize, however, that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and we cannot all be perfect, but I recognize room for improvement, especially in ways that I choose to be better. It is evident to me now that there is little that is impossible. I also see how perspectives can be different depending on our strengths and weaknesses.

With this awareness, I have been self-auditing, asking myself about things I want to improve, what I want to get better at, and how I can keep improving my strengths while also getting better at things I was otherwise not so great at. My partner often says, you can't be great at everything, but the thing you are great at, keep getting better! In many ways I agree, but I don't want to limit myself, I want to be great at my strengths, but also be great at things that give my strength an edge (and that might lie within an area that requires improvement). As a result, I feel a renewed energy to be better, and I wanted to share that with you.

With Love,

Blessing Abeng
