Everyone knows that music has the power to change your mood, one way or another.?JODIE NEWMAN of THE BUSINESS ALLOTMENT says she uses music to help her into an open, more creative state of mind.
She cites a study from 2017 in the PLOS ONE journal, carried out by Dr Simone Ritter, that found listening to what they called ‘happy music’ helped people perform better at divergent thinking – the options-based, explorative type of thinking that is essential to creativity and problem solving.?The music perceived as positive by volunteers increased their ability to come up with original ideas.
“This all makes a lot of sense,” says Jodie.?“I’ve worked with clients for 20 years, and I have stacks of anecdotal evidence that being in a positive frame of mind is a creativity booster – and music is a brilliant way of unlocking a positive feeling.”
Composer and Music Producer MICHAEL COLTHAM is the founder of Black Lab Music, and explains further: “Music sets aside our logic, and engages our emotions.?It has the unparalleled ability to take all of our joy and all of our pain, condense it into a single moment, and then allows us to relive that moment without any of the consequences.?This is why ‘that song’ makes you cry.?And it is in our emotions that our creativity lies…waiting to be awoken, to be released, to be embraced – and music enables that.?Music connects with our core creativity, inspiring us in ways that defy logic, in ways that transcend political, social and intellectual boundaries, by arousing something in us that releases our creativity – our creativity that was previously caged by logic.”
So, if you want to uncage your creativity, music could be the key!?Make it a creative habit, and build your own creative playlist.?
Jodie has put together a playlist of 20 songs, called?’Songs For Ideas’, that clients, collaborators and friends use to shift their thinking to get inspired and be more creative.?You can download the playlist on The Business Allotment website.?Click on The Tool Shed, download the listening notes, and access the playlist by clicking on the vinyl record.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT?- CR38IVES Member - Actor DAVID JOHN CLARK
David John Clark is an actor based in Adelaide, South Australia.??
He spent most of his childhood travelling around Australia in a caravan with his parents and younger siblings.?He got his first taste of acting as an extra in the booming movie industry in Sydney during the 1990's, including a walk-on role in ‘Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones'.
“I made a very fleeting appearance as a freighter captain in the scene when the former Queen of Naboo was being escorted back to her home planet,” says David.?“All I had to do was walk in front of NATALIE PORTMAN and R2D2 after the assassination attempt.?It’s so quick on screen, you can only recognise it’s me if you hit the pause button!?But GEORGE LUCAS himself gave me direction in the timing of the walk-past – so I can boast of being directed by the great George Lucas!”
However, adulthood, marriage and fatherhood brought responsibility, and David soon left any acting aspirations behind him.?It was only when he hit his forties that he realised that acting was his calling.
From 2013, he began various acting training courses in Adelaide, including 12 months of training with ACTOR’S INK.?He also trained with JEFF SEYMOUR of The Real Life Actor (USA), and has been mentored by Casting Director GREG APPS.?His agents Nick and Carina at AAA TALENT continue to develop his career, and he is now a well-known and respected actor in the South Australian film and television industry.
David is not alone in becoming a professional actor late in life.?He talks to many such actors around the world on his monthly podcast?‘The Late Bloomer Actor’, which is available on most audio streaming platforms.?Here’s a link to one of them:
David is also a competitive bodybuilder, and has competed in several Australian state championships.?He is married to Kellie Clark, with whom he shares three sons.
