Does LinkedIn (really) work for legal professionals?

Hey Legal friends! Happy September and fall!

What you may have missed

It has been a hell of a week!

I went to CLOC EMEA in London, I gave in to the FOMO.

  • £1,500 is a stretch for a solo business owner like me. And my husband gave me the push I needed, saying 'you never lose money by networking'. And network I did! - I am clearly flexing

I closed my next cohort of my coaching program

I finally woke up this week to fantastic news from my clients (link to original post).

  • One got a new job and is stepping up in her career
  • Another one is celebrating her first year in entrepreneurship with a track record of successes (100+ startups, one new client a week)
  • Another of one is beginning her entrepreneurial journey, unexpectedly!

Now I won't lie I am tired. It is tiring to wear multiple hats a week. I am currently doing admin, marketing, BD, sales and CEO'ing my long-term vision between two sales calls.

If you do not know my origin story, I invite you to check it out (click here). I hope it will give you more context in terms of the behind-the-scenes and what it takes.

But I aspire to build something of value for the legal industry. Finally mastering the art of promoting ourselves because no one else will do that for us.

  1. I know talented legal executives that got their jobs taken away because the economy sucks.
  2. I speak to people who don't appreciate how much value they can bring and how much more there could be out there for them.
  3. I speak to people who feel confident in their ability to land clients, attract a bigger job with a better pay or work patterns. Our destiny is us to build, but as any building, you can't just get away with the foundations (your education, experience). You need leverage to stack bricks after bricks quickly. This is where LinkedIn comes in.

Does LinkedIn really work for legal professionals?

I won't lie, I genuinely thought that after all the successes and transformations I have witnessed over the past year, (you can check the success stories on my website) I was (naively) hoping for greater adoption by legal professionals.

The interest is definitely growing (I generated 26 leads in 2 weeks recently) but I am still seeing a need for greater education about what it takes to build a rock solid profile and legal hero brand on LinkedIn.

And here is my honest take on it, treat it like a weight loss or anything else requiring transformation type of journey

"How long does it take to start seeing results"?

  • It is not a get rick quick scheme. you need to pull your weight and be at it for a minimum of 3-6 months IF you have a strategy and know how to do it and execute (which is what my program does).
  • If you're figuring it out on your own. You'll find yourself lost and will probably change your posting styles, topics multiple times before everything starts to make sense. This was me and it took me 3-4 good years to make sense of where I wanted to position myself, the way I wanted. If you are prepared to pay your learning curve with 4 years of your precious time, then do it. But start asap.

"How much time do I have to invest"?

  • Like in weight loss. Nothing happens on the back of eating one salad a week. The daily moves are what makes the difference, because efforts compound. So if you're posting once every 2 weeks, do not engage with the community, I am sorry to say but you're not setting yourself up for success.
  • I spend a good 5-6 hours a week on LinkedIn. Because it is never just about the content. It is about getting inspired for new posts, refining my craft, engage in conversations, reaching out to people.. Does 5-6 hours feel too much? Everything starts from zero. 15-min a day engaging with other people's content, messaging the people who post content you enjoy are all low hanging fruits you can start picking."What if it does not work for me?"As with death and taxes, something is certain is that you'll never know if you don't give yourself a chance to succeed. Picture Michael Jordan sitting on the bench wondering if you could become a basketball legend, rather than picking up the ball and training? It has worked for so many of us who gave it a go, so why not you? Avoid the paralysis analysis at all costs, it won't lead you anywhere. You will miss all the shots you've never taken.

I appreciate that it may feel too overwhelming at first, hence why I am launching (and testing) a 4-week accelerator for those who may just need that bit of support to get going.

Let me know if you'd like to find out more!

Until next time!

Sarah

People see the success stories on LinkedIn. They see the likes They see the comments They see the wins & achievements But they don't see the hard work & consistency behind the scenes. The posts that flopped The DMs that go unanswered The newsletters that went to 4 people BUT - we all start somewhere, don't we Sarah?? ??

If we just read and follow you, the answer is YES, it works ! But very helpful to remind the hard work behind, because even if it works, it's not an easy thing and not everybody will reach the stars as you ?
