LinkedIn is undeniably the most extensive professional/business network around. It's not as big as Facebook or Instagram, but CEOs, managers, HR staff, and other professionals abound on this network. In short, the most influential decision-makers of SMBs and enterprises have all signed up. Maybe that's why LinkedIn has also become synonymous with spam messages.

I have been using LinkedIn for years, since the beginning pretty much and I always cringe when I get a connection request from a "business development manager," knowing that the pitch comes in just a few minutes.

As someone who's been working professionally and as a business owner since the seventies, I still believe that businesses should focus more on inbound marketing and making their business easier to find online when someone has a need, rather than exerting so much effort on outbound marketing, knocking on all the doors in the neighborhood hoping that 1% of those people might have a need.

Being a spammer on LinkedIn truly hurts a company's reputation, and in the case of real people doing SEO, it has hurt the whole business category. It doesn't help that even LinkedIn encourages the practice by posting articles like "how to make great pitches on InMail." Even they acknowledge that cold calling is no fun, and you have no direct way to know if your pitch is going to be well-received or not.

Now, people think that SEO is synonymous with spam, and it cannot be further from the truth.??

I have two successful SEO businesses, one that people hire to optimize their websites for them and the other for people who want to learn how to do it themselves.??

I have never made a cold call to get more business in my life; I do not have a newsletter, mail out flyers, or do any advertising; I do not send out LinkedIn connection requests and then pitch anyone on my business when they accept.

I optimize my websites for keywords like SEO consultant, SEO training, and SEO coach and wait for somebody to give me a call or send an email message because they have an interest in working with me.?

And I recommend you do the same instead of turning your sales team into a bunch of spammy lead gen telemarketers.
