Does iteration equal satisfaction?
As I painstakingly update each chapter in my upcoming book, I truly recognize the importance of iteration.
You cannot possibly improve if you do not iterate.
In fact, we do this daily from the mundane tasks to the more important ones.
When we choose what to wear to the office, what we will eat for breakfast, we do it when writing, when planning a project, when cooking a recipe, in fact anything that requires change and improvement.
When writing this article, I googled the definition of iteration:
To be honest I loved this particular definition.
Possibly because I work in the IT space, but I also liked the idea of using the previous version as the first point of reference for the next version.
I started to think about how this reflects in our daily lives.
For me it is present as I tweak my book and work with my editor, who helps me dig down deep as I update it just one more time.
To be honest when you are writing a book, "just one more time" feels endless but I know in my heart it needs to be done.
This is how I have felt as I have navigated the changes in my career.
Sometimes I think, is this enough?
Have I achieved what I wanted?
When I am faced with the prospect of no more iterations in my career, it feels empty somehow.
I have always strived for something more.
Another way of making a difference, adding value, learning more and reaching that elusive point where I look out from the top of the mountain and realize I have achieved what I set out to achieve.
When will I eventually feel satisfied with where I am?
Perhaps iteration and satisfaction aren't too far apart.
Perhaps one leads to the other.
What do you think?

2 年Love what you eloquently penned down Mary-Beth Hosking MBT! This question brings to mind for me to remember to be satisfied when we’ve achieved something, while still changing what doesn’t work with something else. More importantly, being contented even more so because there is room for even greater things ahead and enjoying that process of growing. Is this something that resonates with you? Thank you for sharing!

2 年Great perspective Mary-Beth - love this one... could I be slightly controversial and ask your opinion on this... if we're satisfied are we settling or giving up on improvement? I know that's a simplistic approach to a myriad of scenarios, but really keen on your take :)

2 年The human has an incredible 60,000 thoughts a day, 90% of which are repeated from the day before. If we do not challenge these thoughts through iterations, we cannot expect to learn and grow.
