Does it have to be just another year of doing more, better?

So often, you can feel another year is just another cycle in sameness.??

It’s another trip around the Earth, another calendar and fiscal cycle.??If you’re in sales, it’s another ambitious budget, grounded loosely in reality of the current marketplace against a vision for the future.??It’s the lapping of equivocal trends month-over-month while anxiously anticipating the unexpected challenges which are actually expected to surface.??It’s a grind - month by month and quarter by quarter - delivering one day at a time.


I know.??I’ve spent my career in sales & marketing.??It’s easy to get caught up in the cycle and lost in your own purpose.? To be clear, I want to grow sales, profitability, and equity of the brands I represent.??I want to gain market share.??I’m always employing a relentless creativity to solution finding.

?

But, does it have to be just another year of doing more, better?

Well, the truth is, it’s up to you!

?

At the start of each year, I set my own expectations of success as part of my professional agenda.??This includes, being open minded to the possibilities that another cycle offers you and using your inherent knowledge of the ‘sameness’ to go beyond doing more, better.??You are already capable of doing more, better.?


The challenge is in setting tangible goals that are directed at what you want out of your professional growth.? You know yourself better than anyone.??So, I encourage you to reflect on what feedback you have for yourself???What is your own version of a ‘successful’ year???Define the tangible accomplishments for you to be fulfilled in how you spend your time, energy and effort.

Don’t be afraid to build a stronger foundation for future endeavors.??We can all focus on honing our skills, expanding our knowledge, and nurturing our passions. ?It's about taking ownership and investing, purposefully, in ourselves.? If you don’t, your year is destined to be a cycle of sameness.

Once defined, share these goals with your manager. Having their support will only fuel your own engagement. You just may inspire them too.? ????

At times it may feel like inertia takes over, but there are many other ways to not do it bigger or better, consider doing it differently. Hypothesize, test with tactics that are different (on-brand and on target), but a little risk my be a good way to shake things up.
