Does God Care About My Financial Problems?

How do you respond when your financial life goes off the rails? Accidents, unexpected medical problems, market volatility, poor choices…there are many things that can cause financial hardship. These hardships may also cause us to question whether God sees our situation and whether He cares for us.
Put yourself in David’s shoes as you read his words in Psalm 22:1-2:
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
???Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
???and by night, but I find no rest.
David was anointed king by Samuel, an acclaimed warrior, and faithful servant to King Saul and his household, and yet for years David is hounded by Saul. Chased in the wilderness, living in caves, challenged by those who thought he should claim his kingship and oppose Saul. David must have looked at his situation and wondered if God really cared for him. Why did God allow these things to happen? Why wasn’t God responding the way David felt He should? Can you relate to those feelings sometimes?
Despite his suffering and distress, David’s faith doesn’t falter. He pleads with God as “My God” and goes on to acknowledge and praise God’s past faithfulness in verses 3-5 and 22-24:
Yet you are holy,
???enthroned on the praises[a] of Israel.
In you our fathers trusted;
???they trusted, and you delivered them.
To you they cried and were rescued;
???in you they trusted and were not put to shame. (Psalm 22:3-5)

I will tell of your name to my brothers;
???in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
You who fear the Lord, praise him!
???All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
???and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
For he has not despised or abhorred
???the affliction of the afflicted,

and he has not hidden his face from him,
???but has heard, when he cried to him. (Psalm 22:22-24)
We know the end of David’s story. He trusted God and refused to oppose Saul. God fulfilled His promises to David in His own timing.
God does see you. He does hear your prayers. Not only does God see and hear you but He loves you! In Romans 5:8 Paul reminds us that “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
As He hung on the cross, Jesus called out “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). In the moment Jesus bore our sins He felt forsaken by the Father. But we know the end of that story too, three days later Jesus rose from the dead, conquering sin and death and offering eternal life to those who believe in Him!
God loves you THAT MUCH! He sees your situation and is with you to comfort you and give you strength as you navigate your hardships.

Here are few more thoughts and practical suggestions to help you in your situation:
God is the source of security
It is so easy to see our bank account or 401(k) plan as our source of security. Psalm 24: 1 says, “The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it.” All our money and possessions ultimately belong to God and come to us from His generous hand. How wonderful to remember that our security is not in perishable things but in the never-ending love of the God who owns is all!

You’re not alone
As a Christian you are part of a glorious family: the church! Paul writes to the Galatians in chapter 6 to bear each other’s burdens and to seek opportunities to do good to others, especially other Believers. If you are experiencing financial hardships, reach out to your pastor or other trusted friends at church with your troubles and see how God will use His church to move in your circumstances.
?
Learn from mistakes
Unfortunately, sometimes our financial troubles are the result of our own choices. We have all made financial decisions we regret (even financial advisors!). If your financial hardships are a result of a decision you made, see the opportunity to learn from the situation, change things that need to change, and enable yourself to make a different decision in the future.
