Does God appear on the Earth?

Ramayan is a timeless wisdom which is woven into the rich tradition and culture of great Bharat. The country once upon a time thriving on the spiritual values and epicenter of culture embossed in civilization, has preserved the glory of Lord Ram. The supreme Lord Ram even though appeared as a human being, was not human. He appeared during Treta Yuga on the holy land of Ayodhya (means which is invincible or not to be fought). The less intelligent and misled people unfortunately believe him to be a mere person who struggled a lot in his life. But, if you read authentic version of Ramayan, you will be able to understand and appreciate the magnanimity and merciful nature of Lord Ram. Ultimately, "The proof of the pudding is in the eating". Unless we take a little effort to understand god, the god does not respond. In fact Lord reciprocates to our prayers with the same degree of our faith and level of sincerity. In addition to that, the lord does not want us to follow a religion of faith blindly. He has already mentioned exact and elaborate guidelines in detail if(that means there is a choice) one wants to follow the path of spirituality.

One may ask why does supreme god appear on this planet time to time? The answer lies in the life manual, Shrimad Bhagvad Gita(Song of the divine god) which is spoken by Lord Krishna himself around 5 millennium ago on the holy land of Kurukshetra (during Mahabharat war). Lord Krishna mentions the purpose of his appearance on the earth in nice manner.

Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion – at that time I descend Myself.

Lord Krishna tells this to Arjuna(who comes in the lineage of King Bharata, from whose name the country India is still known as Bharat). One may argue, why was god speaking about religions when there was only one religion at that point of time? The answer lies in the definition of the word Dharma which simply means faith or duty. The eternal religion is known as Sanatma Dharma which was there, is there and will be there in the future with different level of adherence in each Yuga(time period). When people start behaving whimsically and there is a substantial decline in the cultural and vedic practices, god appears to reestablish the peace and vedic system. In this line, the next incarnation of Lord Vishnu will be during the end of Kaliyuga(after around 4,27,000 years). Lord Vishnu will come in the form of Lord Kalki who will wipe out the demonic population and start the Satya Yuga(Time period when the religious practices will be at peak).

Shrimad Bhagvad Gita is a precise scripture which emanated from the mouth of Lord Shri Krishna. Though it is a conversation between Krishna and Arjuna(his friend, relative and disciple), the teachings are meant for the benefit of the whole mankind. The purpose and activities to be done on the earth once lord appears, is also mentioned in the Gita in the next verse.

Bg. 4.8

To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after millennium.

The Lord mentions this explicitly and precisely. There are 3 primary and broad activities god performs when he appears:

  1. To deliver the pious: The word Sadhu places a great importance here. The one who is a devotee of the lord is actually a highly elevated sadhu(nice and sober person). Just to help them and show them the confidence that Lord is always there for them, the lord appears on the earth. This is the primary purpose of lord's descendance.
  2. To annihilate the miscreants: This is the secondary purpose of the lord's appearance. To annihilate the demon Ravana, Lord Ram appeared. To kill the demon Kansa, Lord Krishna appeared. To kill the demon Hiranyakashipu, Lord Narsimhadev(Half Lion-Half Man form) appeared.
  3. To reestablish the principles of religion: This is the third purpose in sequence. Once the demon is killed, lord reiterates or reestablishs the vedic principles according to the teachings of Sanatan Dharma.

Now the obvious question is why do we need to understand or know about god's appearance and disappearance. "What is in it for me?" It is most important and sought after question of the modern day generation. Unless people get a rationale or temptation to get some tangible rewards, people do not act positively. For the benefit of the whole mankind the Lord explains this in the next verse.

Bg. 4.9

One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.

Important thing to note here is that one who studies Bhagvad Gita or try to become Krishna's devotee, actually become eligible to attain the god in his abode. It is not that after going there we loose the pleasure or entertainment which we find in this world. But once we get the liberation, we achieve the pure state of Sat(Eternity), Chit(Full of knowledge) and Anand(Pure bliss/happiness). The path of spirituality and its goal both are amazing. It does not defy the happiness in fact it enables us to get the real, long lasting and ever increasing happiness in the spiritual world.
