Does Facebook Geo-targeting even work?
We think that we are pretty good at FB advertising – we’ve been doing this for a while and can usually get pretty good returns. However I am frequently annoyed by having to pay for traffic / clicks / engagement from people that are quite obviously outside our specified catchment areas.
We advertise local businesses to local people so quite often we have a very tightly defined geographic area that we are interested in. FB allows you to specify the area down to within a few KM’s and we are always careful to check that the advert is correctly targeted however we always get clicks and users from way outside our area. I know that there will always be sharing and social media by its very nature will encourage visitors from outside the defined location but it’s pretty annoying when the ONLY traffic is from outside the specified zones.
How can this be. Does FB geo-targeting even work? I'm beginning to think that this is no where near as accurate as it should be. If I am paying £3/click I expect to get clicks based on the specified area – not random people from outside. So, if you are banking on well defined, targeted adverts you might just want to check that you are really getting what you pay for!
Good luck…

7 年Hi Adam, we had a similar experience with a client recently. All of the activity came from outside the defined area. Very disappointing. If FB geo-targeting doesn't work they should not present it as a feature. Very misleading.
