I read somewhere recently that ‘every coach should have a coach’. And I have to say – my gut reaction to that was to disagree. I’m a coach telling you that you don’t always need a coach. I know, that seems counter-intuitive.
I’ve had seasons where I have had my own coach. And these have been fruitful relationships with them providing a perspective that was so different to my own.
But I don’t like the idea that I should be permanently working with one coach, or bouncing through a series of back-to-back relationships with other coaches.
When you have a coach permanently in place it can stunt your growth as a leader in your business and limit your ability to use your own judgement.
It can be a really positive thing for a business owner to NOT have a coach in certain seasons of their business, and if you’re someone who has a long list of people they’ve worked with in the last 12 months, I’d like to gently challenge you about this.
Have you had any stretches in your business where you HAVEN’T had a coach?
Do you feel confident in your ability to show up as the leader of your business?
What happens if you exercise your judgement and you DON’T ask anyone else for advice?
What if you listen to your gut?
Learning to trust yourself is one of the most empowering things you can learn how to do.
So does that mean you should never have a coach? No - otherwise I’m in the wrong profession.
Having the right coach can actually be one of the most positive experiences in your business, because when it works, you can see amazing personal growth and also big leaps forward in your business both in terms of business growth and the thing that I think is often better than just making a business bigger – a growth in how profitable your business is, so you can work less and earn more.
In this week’s podcast I’m exploring how to get the balance right with business coaching, including:
- The empowerment that comes from a business coaching relationship
- The role your coach should never play
- What makes someone uncoachable?
- Do you need a coach at all times?
- The impact personality can have on your coaching relationship
- The 4 questions you should ask yourself before hiring a new business coach.

And tell me in the comments, how frequently do you like to work with a business coach? Never happened before? Once or twice in the past? Or do you enjoy a continuous coaching relationship?
Free Report - The Six Elements of a Seven Figure Consulting Business
I've created a free PDF report called The Six Elements of a Seven Figure Business. It’s my most popular free resource and in it I outline the 6 areas of unscaled businesses that need to change in order to move past being ‘booked up and burned out’ and shifting into that higher gear that gets you cruising again.
It’s the framework that helps consultant women like you find their feet and get back to leading the business, rather than being buried in client work and back-end business operations.
