Does development assistance still have a problem with the ownership principle?

At the CCRS Conference on Development Assistance (DA) we highlight certain institutional problems of Swiss DA (also entrenched in the new IZA Strategy). One of the main challenges is the fact that the priorities of Swiss development assistance reflect preferences of taxpayers and donors in Switzerland but not necessarily those in recipient countries. The conference illustrates this by looking at DA projects that failed because there is no sense of local ownership and therefore also an absence of local motivation to continue with projects once funding expires. But there are also great examples, where DA actually worked due to its focus on local economic empowerment. Join our discussion at the University of Fribourg on September 14!
