Does Corporate America Care About Millennials?

Have you watched Simon Sinek’s recent “The Millennial Question” interview? My wife heard about it and suggested we watch it together. I was really impressed. There were many points I agreed with, but there were others I wanted to challenge. So I called Simon and asked if we could chat about it.

We sat down together and talked about whether or not “Corporate America” not only cares about millennials, but their employees and the environment overall. Through our journey with Simon, we are discovering organizations and CEOs who believe in purpose, teaming and sponsorship -- and those who do not.

Watch our discussion about the millennial challenge, work culture and mentorship versus sponsorship and share your thoughts. What do you observe in your job environment? What’s working? What’s not working? Why?

Fixing The Game by Roger Martin is a great book that relates to parts of this discussion.

This is important stuff - thank you Bob. Another way to think about this is that the behavior of rapidly adopting or rapidly abandoning services, or rallying around a new way of doing business (e.g., Uber, Venmo) was typically ascribed as "Millennials behavior". We have learned that Millennials may have sparked the behavior, but it has gone beyond that generation and is not essentially normal. Millennials can teach companies about the true characteristics of customer behavior - something that is confounding and frustrating business leaders longing for a less disruptive and restless world (that is long gone). Again, great interview.

I enjoyed this conversation and agree with the importance of leading with purpose. As a millennial, I think it is important to include Millenials in the discussion. As Millenials move into leadership positions, there will naturally be a shift in thought based on the way we were raised. It will be interesting to watch that shift.

As a suggestion to really ground the case include a panel of millennials and bump Up the theories and create an active discussion. Btw: i love the millennial spirit and believe we can adapt some of their thinking to accelerate change.
