Ladies, does choosing an outfit for networking fill you with dread?
We are slowly starting to see face to face networking events back on the calendar. It is so wonderful to see real faces rather than the Zoom faces we have become accustomed to!
But, many clients tell me that the worst thing about networking for them is selecting an outfit they feel confident in. So, I thought I would talk you through the steps I use to put an outfit together for networking…
Confidence - this is the most important element - you need to feel confident. You know your stuff, you can talk about it for 60 seconds or 60 minutes because it’s your passion and expertise. But, do you try too hard with an outfit? Do you think you need to dress the way someone else does but then don’t feel like you? All these thoughts can knock your otherwise steadfast confidence.
What to do: Don’t overthink it! Consider what the general dress code is for the event…some networking is business casual, others more business dress. Look through your wardrobe and find an appropriate outfit which you feel great in when you work. You might find it easier starting with one garment, such as shoes or a blouse and building the outfit from there.
What I did: In my example outfit here, I started with a pop of colour in my jacket. I then decide which neutrals I I want to team it with. In this instance, it’s black & soft white. My personality is such that I love a statement shoe, so I selected a pair with a lot of detail. Comfort is a big factor for me too - while they are comfortable enough to stand in for a few hours, I am not having to walk to the venue so will be a great choice. I’d more likely choose a metallic or white brogue if I was walking.
Ultimately, I know that I will feel like me. I will not be worried about feeling uncomfortable and I will be able to concentrate on the job I am there to do.
Be confident. Be appropriate. Be you.
