I recently shared an article on how CIO’s struggle to communicate the value of IT to the business world which you can find here: https://www.cio.com/article/407681/4-steps-for-proving-its-value-to-the-business.html?fbclid=IwAR0pJxBWEK-3bp3arqLPiG4b0euBCmuhzeGw7TVxYEJGB7oaWQn1-83_aeQ
The article maps out four steps that can help to solve this gap.? As I continued to think about this topic over the past week, it dawned on me that the root of the issue may be the IT Executive’s mindset. What we think about translates into how we see the world. In fact, 80% of our success is tied to psychology, and only 20% is tactics. ?
Then, I reflected on the fact that the root of the issue may also be based deep within a company’s culture.?
Think back to when you started your IT career. You were told, “We support the business.” Let’s think about that again, “The Business.” The truth is, virtually every single company runs on technology and without technology, the companies wouldn’t exist.??
I remember when I graduated from college, my first job out of school was Insurance Sales. We were treated like royalty because we were the revenue generators. The truth of the matter is, I wouldn’t have made any sales if it wasn’t for the software I used to create insurance quotes for people.??
We’ve heard numerous times that IT supports the business, “The Business”. When was this concept of “Us” vs. “Them” created? Us as IT, Them as the business formulated.? When in fact, IT is part of the business.??

?This is the misconception that has become ingrained into the minds of companies on how to determine the value that IT holds within their company.
I get it, you are only one person...which means we need to transform entire company cultures on the philosophical view of IT. That may feel like Mount Everest but, if we stop separating the two; “IT” and “Business” we are capable of making headway.?

1 年That is a great article. I appreciate your statements on us vs them. I have always said we all work for the same company, we are one! I never understood that mindset.
