Does Brazil Really Feed The World Like Brazilian Agribusiness Authorities Says?

While Brazilian Agribusiness calls itself one of the most sustainable agricultural industries in the world, our trading & corporate partners around the globe are claiming for net-zero commitments and low impact products, and they’re actually doing something about it.?
Europe agenda for the decade is clearly to become a climate reference to the rest of the world. Even though there are internal discussions around Europe’s food supply, all of the countries in the block are making efforts either to develop a sustainable food sovereignty, or to restrict imports to countries with a zero impacts production. And the same is happening in China and USA.
In the meantime, Brazil’s government boosts conventional agriculture with no plan to shift into #netzero or #netpositive industries, predicting an increase in its global share of exports by the end of the decade, but ignoring this movement being made by its trading partners. And this is not the first time Brazil’s marketshare is threatened: It already happened. History shows us the consequences of not doing anything.?

Also, the solutions we must look for already exist. Regenerative Agriculture has been implemented from small to large-scale, and it is very efficient on keeping carbon in the soil and recovering its soil microbiology. It also increases rainfalls frequency, restoring water in soil. If Brazil is interested in being left behind, then we are on the right path. But we have all the resources to became a huge regenerative player in the global agribusiness agenda, specially with all the environmental assets we can potentially bring.?
We must keep in mind that illegal deforestation makes regularized producers pay for its price, because the whole country gets a bad reputation in the global market. So yes, even though farmers are subject to inspections, doing nothing in the face of illegal deforestation is seen as connivence.?
Brazil has already lost part of its leading role in the global geopolitical scenario, and although well positioned in agribusiness, it might lose its remaining importance by ignoring regenerative systems, which can be highly profitable.

2 年The title of the article is confusing, as you don′t mention anything about Brazil′s role of feeding the world. Instead, you are trying to build a case for Regenerative Agriculture. Yes, Regenerative Agriculture (I′m not sure if you mean only Agroforestry, or other Agroecology practices as well) is indeed a solution for many environmental issues faced in the farming industry. But it is not a silver bullet that will solve all the problems. Agroforestry in large scale projects is still a big challenge, and it is obvious that it is much more appropriate for small scale projects. Transitioning to Agroforestry is also not simple, cheap and quick. It takes time, money and a huge effort to do so. On the other hand, "conventional" farming is quickly adopting techniques originated in Agroecology, like zero tillage, mulchiing, micro-organism farming, organic fertilization, Integrated Pest Management, and many many others. Agriculture in Brazil is changing, and its changing fast. It′s not a novelty that Europe uses MANY arguments to block products from countries that produces cheaper then them. This is a very tipical case. Take a look at Holland Ecological Footprint. They are not exactly in position to think they are greener then Brazil.

2 年Fortunately, Brazil is a leading country in soil conservative Agriculture under no-tillage, and Integrated systems as crop (including crop rotation)/livestock and forest/crop/livestock are boosting land productivity and sustainability.

2 年Felipe, I agree that Brazil will loose its pole position if it does not adopt climate positive agriculture management processes like #regenerativeagriculture. However, I believe that if the Brazilians are to listen, vamos escrever e compartir as mensagens em português, só assim vai ter efeito, n?o acha? #agriculturaregenerativa
