Does audio editing REALLY matter?
You have an opinion about audio editing for podcasts and other audio mediums.
Even if you don't realize it.
Even if you don't state it openly to others or to yourself.
I know it's true when I hear the reactions people have to a piece of audio similar to the one I'm about to share with you.
What is it?
It's ALL of the filler words, verbal ticks, habits, and mouth noises (breaths, slurps, smacks, throat clearings, etc.) that were taken from ONE interview conversation.
ONE.
Some admissions about this particular piece of source audio...
- The guest had one particular vocal habit that was repeated and worse than most guests
- The guest was also not a native speaker of English (the language the conversation was conducted in)
- This degree of dialogue edits is not needed on every piece of audio (but I'd say something close to this is required on at least 65% of all audio my team receives)
But NONE of that changes the argument I'm making here...
In fact, it only strengthens my case.
For the podcast this audio comes from - the average episode is downloaded 500-ish times in the first 40 days.
The clip of edited content you're about to hear is 2 minutes and 35 seconds (155 seconds) minutes in length.
Do the math...
155 seconds X 500 listeners = 77,500 listener-seconds
Divide that by 60 seconds per minute = 1,291 minutes
Divide that by 60 minutes per hour =
21.53 HOURS listening time NOT required of this podcast creator's listeners.
And considering that those 21-ish hours consisted ENTIRELY of ummms, etc. - he did a HUGE SERVICE to his listeners.
So enough with all that... here's the audio.
You can make up your own mind whether or not audio editing is needed.
