Does artificial intelligence have a place in language learning?

There’s no getting away from the rise and rise of artificial intelligence. Since the launch of ChatGPT and other AI sites, its use has become ever more commonplace; it seems everyone is talking about it. But does AI have a role to play when it comes to learning a language? And where are its limitations?

Benefits of AI in learning a language

It’s certainly true that AI has made huge advances in the last couple of years - and it’s here to stay. Here are a few of the benefits of learning a language with AI:

1.?????? You can practice whenever and as often as you like, 24-7, fitting in with busy schedules

2.?????? AI aims to adapt to individual learning styles and paces

3.?????? Some AI-powered language learning platforms can now provide instant feedback on mistakes

4.?????? AI utilises interactive and gamified elements which keeps many learners engaged and motivated

5.?????? AI algorithms can analyse progress and recommend other appropriate materials, podcasts, videos etc

6.?????? AI is great for vocabulary development and grammar.

So, AI does have advantages, and of course is cheaper than learning with a real person. But there are negatives too, especially in these early days of its development.

Disadvantages of AI in language learning

1.?????? The most obvious downside is the lack of real human interaction. Nothing quite beats the genuine empathy, warmth and support from an experienced teacher when the going gets tough – and let’s face it, learning a language can have its challenging moments!?

2.?????? AI can’t yet teach or recognise subtle nuances, idiomatic expressions and cultural context. A real person can give you invaluable insights and guidance, background history, do’s and don’ts

3.?????? Similarly, AI may struggle to understand the context of a conversation, which could lead to inaccuracies or inappropriate responses. It has also been known to invent words!?

4.?????? There are issues over privacy, as AI collects data from its learners, leading to concerns over how this is stored and shared

5.?????? There may be an over-emphasis on writing and reading skills, and not enough attention paid to speaking and being able to converse confidently

6.?????? The dropout rate of people learning a language using a platform is high, which demonstrates the need for accountability with a person to keep up motivation

7.?????? Learning with AI involves using an electronic device – using a screen is not for everyone, especially when so much of our working lives is spent in front of a computer.

The human touch…

So where does this leave us? On the one hand, AI is an amazing tool, and incredible advances have been made and will continue for sure. On the other, if used on its own, as a way of learning a language it’s not enough. ?

Learning a language should involve a real person, an experienced and qualified tutor, offering a tailored approach to take learning from your starting place (whether that’s absolute beginner or high intermediate) towards your specific goals.

We believe the solution lies in using AI as a useful supplement, part of a blended learning approach to language learning. AI is another tool to call upon, just as learners will watch videos, read books, translate text or tackle language exercises, to develop their understanding.

Imagine arriving in a foreign country where you don’t speak the same language. You can use a tool like Google Translate to communicate – how amazing! But if you don’t move beyond the tool, then it can become a barrier; language is about communication and building relationships with other humans.
